First, let me say, I've been running Vista myself for quite some time. Next to me at this very moment is a Gateway 835GM. Under the hood, it has an Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz dual-core processor, an Intel 945G chipset, 1GB DDR2 (double data rate) DRAM, a 250GB SATA hard drive, and built-in Intel GMA (graphics media accelerator) 950 graphics. That's a fairly powerful machine. Which is a good thing, because it's the only PC in my office of 20 PCs that's got enough oomph to run the Windows Vista February CTP (Community Technology Preview) build 5308 without driving me into fits of rage.

Mind you, it's not enough machine for Vista. I could run any Linux with all the bells and whistles on it without a problem. But, even though this system meets Intel's recommendations for a Vista-capable Intel Professional Business Platform, it still doesn't have the graphics horsepower needed to carry off Vista's much ballyhooed three-dimensional Aero Glass interface.

If you want Billy Gates' brand shiny new operating system you'll probably need to buy a new computer.

It's a good thing I'm just about at new computer buying time, then. I don't know if I want Vista, though - it doesn't seem to offer any sort of massive improvements over XP and has a lot of stuff I don't want, like it's digital rights management scheme. How annoying.

I'm thinking of switching to a Linux-based OS. o We can even test drive a "live distro" of one of several different versions of Linux without actually installing it, Doug. It's more work than Windows, but it's free and your OS won't be so much of a target for nuisance software and virus attacks. Radiorahim and others have posted numerous goodies and how-to's for switching over and dealing with various hardware and software issues. Lots of help on the web, too.

DRM stuff is a deal breaker for me. I don't burn music or anything else, but I won't support software that is designed to restrict individuals rights.

I'm convinced that Vista is going to be one of those things that's going to push a whole lot more of the somewhat more computer-savvy folks over to Linux.

In the meantime there are lot's of "live CD" distros available that you can "test drive" without installing.

If you need alot of "handholding" there are the easy (but not free...although cheaper than M$) commercial Linux distros like Linspire and Xandros.

Then of course lots of free distros with a bit less handholding...and some that are honest to goodness "geekware".

Since folks on this board tend to be anti-establishment to at least some degree, you'll find quite a few Linux users on babble.
