Rarely have protests in China been so well organised, or the protesters so well-dressed.

The residents of Pingyang district, in the south of the city, say their health is at risk and their homes will become worthless if a planned extension to Shanghai's futuristic maglev railway goes ahead.

In a country where air pollution is such a problem, NIMBY-ism is right. I'm sure there are forces at work that we're not hearing about.

We could use mag-lev here, from coast to coast to coast.

How ironic. In China there are demonstrations by property owners against public transit adopting mag-lev rail technology, while in Vancouver, the day following an announcement of $-billions going to extend public transit's rail and bus services, we have real estate agents and developers salivating over increased property and land value:

The BBC story misses the issue: distance from the line. German specifications require a 300-meter leeway on both sides of the track. But the ShangHai proposal would have a greenbelt measuring only 22.5 meters wide. Nimbys? But it is in their backyard.

This would save the cost of the wider greenbelt, which would mean buying and demolishing more properties.

The MagLev can do 430 km/hr (or even 450?) rather than 320, but is that worth the extra cost? Undecided, some are.
