Why should Putin allow foreign companies to share in Russia’s wealth? Putin is not running a “charity”. He is expected to use his nation’s resources to improve things for the Russian people, which is exactly what he is doing. The insistence that he do otherwise by entering into a “trade partnership” violates the central tenet of capitalism; the right to private property. These are Russian resources. They do not belong to the extended family of predatory corporatists.

I think the very situation that brought down the Soviet economy in the years 1985-86 to 1989, is in reverse at the moment. That is, Saudi Arabia was dumping oil on world markets at that time and causing lower world oil prices - this caused the Soviet economy to lose billions in revenue at a time of economic downturn. It seems now that the Saudi's are working with the Russians in maintaining relatively higher oil prices now in comparison with the mid 1980's. Speculation says that higher oil and gas prices are the real reason for Russia's economic expansion and certainly nothing to do with long-term effects of perestroika.

from FM's link:

We should expect more violence in Chechnya and Georgia as well as a steady stream of abuse in the western press.

I have no doubt that western energy multinationals are funding the Chechen "rebels" and mercenaries in general flowing in and out of that country from all over Central Asia, Turkey etc. The enemy is at the gates once again.

There was an article in the Scotsman in 2003 that alleges to quote former Taliban deputy chief of finance as saying the Taliban now receive as much funding as they did when OBL bankrolled them leading up to 9-11. The article goes on to say that several surrounding countries have an interest in seeing the U.S. fail in its bid for imperialism in Afghanistan, namely Pakistan, Iran and Russia. The cold war is now the colder war.
