Another in the series of "Stories I Wish I Had Made Up": quote: Women MPs in Israel's Knesset have criticised the foreign ministry for resorting to "pornography" to promote Israel abroad after a feature appeared in the men's magazine Maxim featuring four former soldiers photographed in their underwear. [...]Zahava Gal On, the leader of the Meretz party, said it was inappropriate for western countries to market themselves using half-naked women. "It is unfortunate that the New York consulate thinks that Israel's relevance will be expressed by the use of naked women who are treated as an object, and not as women of substance who exude achievement and success," she said. Colette Avital, of the Labour party, described the article as a "pornographic campaign to encourage tourism". [...] Staff at the consulate said that they decided a photoshoot would be a good way of promoting Israel to young Americans. David Dorfman, an adviser at the consulate in New York, told the Associated Press: "Males that age have no feeling towards Israel one way or another, and we view that as a problem, so we came up with an idea that would be appealing to them."

Hey, looks like the Israeli army has discovered the image of the beautiful sexy killer diva to sell itself.Kind of brings to mind a new twist to the old adage, quote: What's a nice girl like you doing murdering people like this?
The situation just gets more outrageous year after year. Is there still reason to hope?

Nothing like being objectified in an organization where you have to do mandatory service. There's no life like it, no there's no life like it, no there's...
Love the caption "they are drop dead gorgeous"! Excuse but what were these women thinking?

I think someone said once that a woman's body is the ultimate pacifier, a symbol of peace and a soothing sight in general. I think they even went so far as to suggest that the sight of half naked women could stop two sides from warring in an instant. I can't quite put my finger on it as to why, but I'm thinking good thoughts about Israelis for some reason or another.

I'm not sure what Israel could do. Did these women willingly pose? Are they allowed to do or would they be obligated to not mention they're soldiers? There seems to be no shortage of physically beautiful woman who want to pose for maxim, FHM, et cetera. I would guess they mostly enjoy the tradeoff of getting tens of thousands of dollars in exchange for being made to be a fantasy. On the other hand... A friend and I were searching if any of our attractive acquaintances had posed anywhere, and we found her friend's cousin in a European magazine of that soft porn sort. He (my friend's friend) got kind of defensive when she asked, he said the photographer tried to rape her. [ 22 June 2007: Message edited by: 500_Apples ]

A symbol of peace, or do you mean piece? If they stopped fighting for a moment at the sight of naked woman, it would start again in a few seconds over who was going to get to rape her first.
I'm just trying to understand the imagery of the message they're trying to get across. Sex appeal combined with such a violent symbol as the military is a visual oxymoron for me, too. Supremacy of the military and rampant sexism are but two of the defining characteristics of fascism
