National Representative, Youth Issues
(Term Appointment)

The Canadian Labour Congress has a vacancy in the position of National Representative for Youth Issues. The successful applicant will report to the National Director, Education and Campaigns Department.

Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Representative, in coordination with the National Director will be to:
? work with CLC, Vice-President for Youth, departments and staff, affiliates, labour councils and federations in the development of programs to increase the participation of young workers in the labour movement;
? initiate projects and assist in the coordination of activities of affiliates and federations to increase the profile of unions with young
workers and increase the ability of the CLC and affiliates to reach out to young workers in unorganized workplaces;
? maintain and develop CLC education program materials and modules related to youth issues;
? represent the CLC at youth functions, committees, meetings, conferences and other events on youth issues;
? develop links with student and youth groups and work with the International Department to strengthen links with other labour organizations and international NGO’s;
? perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications
The successful applicant will have:
? experience as an activist in a union;
? experience working on youth issues in unions and a sound knowledge of the labour movement;
? an understanding of the CLC structure and its affiliated unions;
? an understanding of a broad range of social and economic issues affecting youth;
? the ability to work with community and coalition partners and to relate to young workers;
? demonstrated ability to work independently, initiate projects, plan and organize campaigns in the labour movement and within the broader community;
? good verbal and written communication skills and analytical skills;
? knowledge of basic computer skills including word processing, e-mail and internet research capabilities.

Term of appointment
The CLC definition of youth is a person under the age of 27 years. The term of this appointment is to the end of the month in which the National Representative on Youth Issues reaches the age of 27 years.

The ability to work in Canada’s two official languages will be considered an asset.

The successful applicant will be located in Ottawa, possess a valid driver’s license, and will be expected to travel.

The salary range for the position is $62,357.10 to $64,611.82 per annum plus additional benefits under the collective agreement (CEP/CULR-1).
