so, how does a non-rich student get his hands on a pair of good sneakers that aren't made by Nike, Adidas or other such ogres?

Can't really help you with the where.

I guess the question that should be asked first is what are you going to do: run, play tennis, walk, etc.? As a former competitive distance runner you must be careful what you buy; if you are going to run, the shoe must be designed for that activity. To look for a cheap shoes is just courting injury.

Obviously you don't like the ogres such as Nike, etc. but I have a feeling you are going to be stymied in your search. BTW, if you find someone who makes good shoes that are cheap and aren't made by slaves, let me know.

Runner's World publishes an annual shoe issue that evaluates shoes, but then they just pander to Nike, Adidas, etc. so we are back to square one.

well Reebok does have a ways to go, but they have come a long way from their earlier, Nike-like days..
then again, since you're like me and are both non-rich and a student, that probably isn't your best option

One of my daughter's insists she had been wearing the same pair of "Brooks" sneakers for almost 4 years. (grade 9 through almost all of 12)

I'm really sceptical about that, but on the other hand I don't remember the last time I did buy her a pair of sneakers.

So, if that's true, considering "Brooks" is a bargain brand, then that's increadible value-- also considering this daughter is the one who walks everywhere, too.

I'm not sure how nice "Brooks" are to thier workers, but then, I'm not sure about any of them.

I've always liked Saucony for running, but it's been a few years since I had a pair.

Not to sure where they're made either.
