Tenant presses charges, gets evicted: Woman who alleges superintendent sexually assaulted her forced to pack up and move

quote:
A metro woman who alleges that one of her building superintendents sexually assaulted her is being forced to leave her apartment.

The woman, whose identity is banned from publication, has to move at the end of the month because the management company that runs her building won't renew her lease.

One of the superintendents it employs faces two charges each for alleged sexual assault and uttering threats.

The woman doesn't know where she'll go. She faces long waiting lists to get into government-subsidized housing.

"It makes me wonder why people go forward," said the mother of one. "It's just not fair. I've been put down to the lowest."

The woman gave management staff a letter dated March 8 outlining an alleged sexual harassment complaint against the super.

Citigroup Properties Ltd. gave the woman notice to leave April 13.

Citigroup president Earl Munroe initially told The Daily News the woman came forward with allegations after she was given notice to leave.

Citigroup property manager Wendy Dube later confirmed notice was given to the woman after she brought forward sexual harassment concerns. Her outlook would have been different had the woman told her she was sexually assaulted rather than harassed, Dube added.

Dube said a compilation of issues was the reason for giving a non-renewal notice.

She said the woman was given notice because the relationship had broken down between landlord and tenant.

Tough logic to follow.

Edited to add: I just noticed the manager's first name is "Wendy"

Yeah, no kidding. That jumped out at me too. What the hell? If it was just sexual harassment, it would've been okay to evict her when she complains about it?

Holy god. I hope this gets some good media attention.

Reading the article through, it's interesting what the management of the building has done to discredit her, calling her a "problem tenant" because "the family" next door doesn't like her as she "constantly" called the police on them. No other details, so we're left with thinking that she's a troublemaker. As opposed to, maybe she rightfully called the cops on her neighbours.

And, typical, heartbreaking and aggravating, is that other women in the building talk of similar experiences with this particular superintendent. He sounds gross and inappropriate to say the least, a sexual predator is more likely.

As a woman who lives alone I can relate, although I've never had a landlord or super who was a pig like this. But it does make you want to not "rock the boat" and adds a level of vulnerability to standing up for yourself. It's where you live, FFS! Once dude knows where you live it's a scary freaky feeling.

Since this woman was supposedly evicted in April or May, I wonder what happened to her.

I'm glad it made the paper, but I doubt it will get the attention it needs.

Actually, she was notified then, but it sounds like her date to be out is July 31.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the article, there's a related piece that details that help that she's been getting from her MLA, New Democrat Dave Wilson.

Thanks Scott, I guess that explains why it's in the news now. Maybe there will be a follow up? Please keep us posted.

I did read all the way down and felt somewhat heartened that she has a bit of a heavy hitter on her side. It remains a suckfest of a situation, however.
