The hurricane season that has devastated the southern United States and the Carib-bean entered a deadly new phase yesterday as Tropical Storm Jeanne claimed more than 300 lives in Haiti.

Story
Due to extreme poverty in Haiti, a nation impovershed since becoming an example of the first successful slave revolt in the Western Hemisphere, has a tree canopy of barely two per cent. Trees are cut and burned for cooking and heating. The result is tropical storms result in major flooding and mud slides.
