Here's a critique from a former Israeli negotiator, Daniel Levy

Obama's turn to sniff some neocon butt tomorrow. Watch and listen as he propagates the "Iran wants nuclear weapons" bullshit, revealing to all, that no matter the color or the party of the candidate, US politics is grossly distorted and corrupted by the Israel lobby.

Obama has neither the balls nor moral fortitude to buck the McCain line.

...say hello to the new boss, same as the old boss...

Yeah Obama has definitely trying to patch up relations with rightwing Zionists. I don't doubt that there will be a chunk of Clinton supporters that would likely go over to McCain. But as Levy says, the neocons (and AIPAC for that matter) are out of touch with most American Jews and the majority of them won't be casting their ballots for McCain.

The fix is in. It's all a charade. One big gaping democracy gap.

I have yet to hear Obama's AIPAC speech. Levy seems to be agreeing with Obama, who sounds quite reasonable to me. He is not a Likudnik and has never pretended to be, but he is certainly supportive of Israel.

As expected, Obama would not let himself be out-pandered by Clinton and McCain:

quote:

Let me be clear. Israel's security is sacrosanct. It is non-negotiable. The Palestinians need a state that is contiguous and cohesive, and that allows them to prosper - but any agreement with the Palestinian people must preserve Israel's identity as a Jewish state, with secure, recognized and defensible borders. Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided.

I don't actually think that the "Israel lobby" is all that big a factor. There are a plethora of historical, sentimental, domestic political and geo-political reasons why American politicians across the political spectrum became almost uniformly pro-Israel from about the late 60s onwards. To the extent that the "israel lobby" has any impact, its only because they operate in an atmosphere that makes almost everyone in Washington receptive to them.

If Saudi Arabia could easily outspend the "Israel lobby" and lobby the US to be anti-Israel - but it probably wouldn't do much good.

Florida is a tossup and there is a large elderly Jewish population there that is much more comfortable with Clinton than Obama (many of them for instance voted for Ed Koch and Rudy Giuliani in NYC). I don't doubt Obama will win the Jewish vote, but even a difference between say, 70% and 80% could swing Florida and maybe Ohio and Pennsylvania as well into the GOP camp.

In Florida it's a possibility. I mean if Obama gets only 75% of the Jewish vote instead of the usual 85% then it doesn't help - but I think that Florida may be unwinnable anyways for other reasons.

Most of the rest of the Jewish vote in the US is concentrated in states that are so safely Democratic that any slight erosion (if it even happens) won't matter (i.e. New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois, California etc...)

But, IF ONLY Protestants and Catholics as well as Hispanics in the US would be as heavily pro-Obama as American Jews are - Obama would win every state except Utah!
