To attempt to curb the growing problem of obesity, Berlusconi's right-wing government wants to bring back the weekly Friday fast, and impose it in schools, hospitals, the public sector. I agree with public support for healthy eating and exercise, but there is something eerily reminiscent of authoritarian rule in such "fasting by decree".

quote:
"In school and works canteens and in the hospitals, we shall take the path of reduced portions and a day of abstinence," Mr Sirchia declared.

Oh, great. That's just what sick people -- all sick people -- really need.

I wish that the apologists for big business would one day try taking a little responsibility for the problems they have caused, rather than again and again blaming the essentially powerless for making the only choices left to them.

The Italian government is exceptionally bizarre, though. Remember Berlusconi's distress over the bloomers of the ladies of Genoa? I hear he is also about to release a CD of love songs he has written. Italy's answer to John Ashcroft?
