Hundreds of B.C. postal workers have been hit with five-day suspensions for refusing to cross picket lines during the days of protest staged during the recent teachers' strike.

Canada Post has sent letters to hundreds of its employees in the Kootenays and on Vancouver Island, telling them they will be suspended for engaging in "unlawful work disruption."

I called Canada Post yesterday and registered my opposition to this decision. They can be reached at 1-800-267-1177. Ask for a file number to your complaint to ensure that it's been recorded.

Outrageous! CUPW and its members have been wonderful at respecting picket lines regardless of union affiliation.

From CUPW:

quote:
Thanks to the magnificent work of the Victoria Local, Canada Post got the message loud and clear that postal workers are standing up for free collective bargaining. Postal workers in Victoria were proud, strong and determined. This included letter carriers, clerks, Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC), dispatchers and mail service couriers.

But Gordon Campbell and his government still would not back down. So the B.C. Federation of Labour called for a Day of Protest in the Kootenays for Wednesday.

Once again CUPW members stood up for fairness, justice, and a decent education for all. Postal workers in Castlegar, Nelson, and Trail were off the job as were thousands of other workers.

In Fernie and Sparwod, members of the Elk Valley Local stood shoulder to shoulder with teachers. So did postal workers in Cranbook. In Golden, CUPW members said no to Bill 12 and yes to fairness.
