Was I wrong to laugh when I saw this headline dated Oct. 6, 2006? It could easily have been March 2003:

Battle in Baghdad heats up: Securing capital may prove crucial to U.S.-led conflict

quote:
The Iraq war could be heading to its decisive moment: a battle for the capital, Baghdad, that has turned dramatically bloodier for U.S. soldiers and carries enormous stakes for the country's future.

At least 13 U.S. soldiers have been killed around Baghdad since Monday -- the highest four-day U.S. toll in the capital since the 2003 invasion.

My prediction - after the November elections, the Bush administration will start working on a withdrawal plan. Watch for the puppet government to fall shortly thereafter to much bloodshed and cheering of the masses - and Saddam Hussein or someone like him to rise to power.

If I'm wrong and the U.S. sticks around much longer, continuing to get its sorry ass kicked and killing off its own incompetent unmotivated recruits, watch for Iraq to break up into three states.

Unionist, they may be unmotivated recruits, but think they will have had the best of training at what they do. I think many of them will have come from working class backgrounds, and they are there because they believe in their own causes for a steady income and willing to risk life and limb for it. ie. Jessica Lynch and her cause to access higher education and become a teacher of children. See the world, get a free college degree and serve flag and country all at the same time. What young person among the lower and lower-middle classes could turn down an offer like that ?. Of course, this could never happen in Canada.

Actually I expect the US to withdraw, and then Iraq will likely be split into two or three states. The Kurds will get the country they deserve, and the Shias and Sunnis will battle it out for the rest. A Shia dominated country will look more like Iran than a Baathist Iraq.

Yes, it is quite possible that present events point towards a huge increase in influence for Shiite Iran and its mullahs.

I fear, though, that the only way out for Bush and his associates will be to extend the war to Iran, in the hope that they can effect regime change there, too.

This temptation to try and save their reputations from the Iraq disaster by a "home run swing" at Iran would have terrible consequences. One of them would be that Iran would begin to exert its influence in Eastern Afghanistan, which is filled with Farsi speakers.

Canada would then be stuck in Afghanistan facing a "sanctuary" in Pakistan, and another one in Iran on the East. It would be the ultimate quagmire.

I think the US would simply nuke Iran's military and nuclear facilities, without an invasion.

Well, Boom Boom, that would be the end of the United States. It would go "Boom Boom"! So I think you're wrong.
