Was I wrong to laugh when I saw this headline dated Oct. 6, 2006? It could easily have been March 2003:Battle in Baghdad heats up: Securing capital may prove crucial to U.S.-led conflict quote: The Iraq war could be heading to its decisive moment: a battle for the capital, Baghdad, that has turned dramatically bloodier for U.S. soldiers and carries enormous stakes for the country's future. At least 13 U.S. soldiers have been killed around Baghdad since Monday -- the highest four-day U.S. toll in the capital since the 2003 invasion.
My prediction - after the November elections, the Bush administration will start working on a withdrawal plan. Watch for the puppet government to fall shortly thereafter to much bloodshed and cheering of the masses - and Saddam Hussein or someone like him to rise to power. If I'm wrong and the U.S. sticks around much longer, continuing to get its sorry ass kicked and killing off its own incompetent unmotivated recruits, watch for Iraq to break up into three states.

Yes, it is quite possible that present events point towards a huge increase in influence for Shiite Iran and its mullahs.I fear, though, that the only way out for Bush and his associates will be to extend the war to Iran, in the hope that they can effect regime change there, too. This temptation to try and save their reputations from the Iraq disaster by a "home run swing" at Iran would have terrible consequences. One of them would be that Iran would begin to exert its influence in Eastern Afghanistan, which is filled with Farsi speakers. Canada would then be stuck in Afghanistan facing a "sanctuary" in Pakistan, and another one in Iran on the East. It would be the ultimate quagmire.
