The yummy kind And thank you, Michelle. You just proved a point I was trying to make. Asking people if they like tax cuts is like asking people if they like cookies.

Who in their right mind wouldn't want to pay less taxes? But who would want to sacrifice more of the things those taxes pay for?

So anyway, I ask again, Who likes cookies?!!!

...and I would like to keep on making my point, so everyone, sing the praises of cookies!!!

YAY!! II. I've never met a cookie I didn't like -- OK, one or two, maybe.

skdakl, how 'bout a copy to me as well? I love peanut butter.

I think this thread should be under "Body and Soul." Soul, anyway.

Any cookie that contains raisins or any other variety of fruit is just plain wrong. I'm not a fan of cookies with nuts in them either.

I make my chocolate chip cookies with whole wheat flour. Make me feel a little less guilty about scarfing down cookies.

Nah, it's under earning and spending for a reason - meades was using it as an analogy because it's a dumb question to ask if people like tax cuts (just like it's a dumb question to ask if people like cookies). I like cookies, but I don't like them enough to only put cookies on my grocery list instead of the rest of the food I buy.

Skdadl: why not post the recipe? That way EVERYONE can partake in the joy of cookies!!!!!

Michelle: quite right! at first, I was worried audra might switch this thread to body and soul just after I created the topic, but thanks to you posting within the first five minutes, the analogy was a success!!!

For some reason, those were the cookies of choice in my old house in Toronto whenever we sparked up the old bong. I'll forever associate them with that.

If Pavlov was right, I could maybe get toasted just by eating some.

I've had deep-fried ice cream. Can't remember offhand where, though. Maybe a Thai restaurant.

If you like ice cream, or strange quiet comedy, you should watch a Bill Forsyth movie from the 80s, "Comfort and Joy."

Oh, a Bill Forsyth thread a Bill Forsyth thread!

But first I must discharge an obligation:

Peanut Butter Cookies
(Source: I have to confess: this is straight out of Joy of Cooking. What makes all the difference is the kind of peanut butter; see note at end.)

Pre-heat oven to 375.

In a small bowl, sift or mix together
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
In a large bowl, beat until soft
1/2 cup butter
Add the sugar gradually and cream (blend until creamy). Beat in
1 egg
1 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
Sift before measuring
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Add the flour to the batter; and add
1/2 tsp vanilla

Roll the dough into small balls (use a teaspoon as a scoop). Place on a greased cookie-sheet; press each flat with a fork (dip fork in a bit of flour to keep it from sticking). Bake for about 15 minutes.

A nice touch: press a whole or half peanut into the centre of each cookie before baking.

Campaign for real peanut butter: Real peanut butter has NOT been "hydrogenated." Loblaws has always carried a famous generic real peanut butter, but under different labels; I think they now sell it as a President's Choicer, but check the label to make sure you're getting the non-hydrog stuff. Some health-food-store peanut butter is too virtuous to be tasty: often purists insist on using raw peanuts and no salt, and the pb therefore tastes pretty raw. Our local store sells great stuff, though; the peanuts have been roasted, and a little salt has been added. As always: seek, and ye shall find.

I'm not a big fan of deep fried ice cream. The crust always gets stuck in my teeth.

There's a tex-mex restaurant near by apartment that makes deep fried cheesecake. It's evil in its deliciousness.

It's the same idea as Baked Alaska. The temperature is high enough that the outside cooks quickly enough for there not to be time for the ice cream to melt.

Has anybody still kept up the important childhood rituals for eating cookies, such as eating the filling of an oreo, or better yet, a fudgio seperatly and intact from the outside? Or on a more sophisticated level, with the marshmallow cookies, eating the chocolate off, letting the marshmallow part melt in the mouth, then consuming the bottom. Ritual is an important component of a full life.

Just by coincidence, I happen to make the worlds best chocolate chip cookies. I also make fairly superior Christmas short breads. My Mom used to use the same chocolate chip cookie recipe, only put in carroway seeds instead of chocolate chips. I guess we all have weird emotional baggage we carry from our mothers. At least she didn't make me eat them. My kids often volunteer my chocolate chip cookies for special class events, telling me about it at nine o'clock the night before. My point was.... ummm... oh yea I really enjoy baking but after I make them I have zero interest in eating them. I guess that wasn't a real big point.

Oreos..you had to talk about Oreos...

The winter ones that come dipped in white chocolatey stuff are fantastic.

Double-stuffed are perfect for those of us who just eat the icing...(try explaining when someone finds an entire bag full of just the actual cookies)

And my absolute favorite - oreo soup. Put em in a bowl, add milk, get a spoon, and voila. My husband thinks I'm insane and it makes for a messy dish afterwards but the oreo goodness is well worth the mocking. (You can't use double-stuffed, however - can't get the spoon through without breaking them apart then).

They actually turned the Oreo Soup idea into a consummer product. There is now Oreos... Oreo-cookie flavoured cereal O's.

But this cookie thread just gave me the urge to bake cookies. I think there's some Piltsbury Chocolate Chunk cookie dough in the fridge. Yumm!

The oreos sink. And I TOTALLY FORGOT about Oreo ice cream!!! That is the absolute best!

I've tried the oreo o's - they're OK but the magic of oreo soup is the softening of the cookie, combined with the icing. Can't put that in what is basically just another type of cheerio.
