NEW FRAMEWORK FOR THE U.S.-INDIA DEFENSE RELATIONSHIP

quote:
1. The United States and India have entered a new era. We are transforming our relationship to reflect our common principles and shared national interests. As the world's two largest democracies, the United States and India agree on the vital importance of political and economic freedom, democratic institutions, the rule of law, security, and opportunity around the world. The leaders of our two countries are building a U.S.-India strategic partnership in pursuit of these principles and interests.

Having forced Pakistan's government into subserviance during the invasion of Afghanistan, the US now enlists India as a strategic defence partner. No doubt this will be seen largely through the lens of the War on Terror, however one has to ask if this is not part of an overall strategic policy designed to contain China?

Not an expert here, but could this be the result of an Indian initiative for their own reasons? IIRC, they had any number of defense-type relationships with the USSR, possibly as a counterweight to US-supported Pakistan and China. But with the USSR out of the picture, the Indians may have decided to go to the US.

Well yes. And also India started and horribly lost a war it tried to fight with the Chinese in 1960. That ended up with the Chinese over the Hindu Kush and onto plains below and on their way to calcutta before withdrawing.
