Whitehorse had an interesting visitor today. A Russian made MI-26, the worlds largest helicopter, landed on it's way to the Northwest Territories.
Divek Diamond Mines is using this monster to transport a shovel to their mine. The early melting of the ice roads forced them to find an alternative methode of moving the shovel.
The MI-26 can left 20 metric tonnes, costs $13,000 an hour to operate and consumes 3500 liters of fuel per hour. I'd like to fill up with my Aeroplan card please.
The irony is incredible. Global warming melts the ice raods early so something which pumps an incredible amount of greenhouse gases in to the air is brought in. This will encourage even earlier spring thaws.
I guess it makes those Hummer owners look positively environmental!
Sorry, no links to anything yet. All info off the evening news cast.

That copter sounds impressive. I flew with a helicopter pilot in Northern Ontario in a Bell 202 one time. We were living in an empty warehouse building in Wawa at the time. The pilot made a habit of flying new guys under the train bridge on the way out to the bush. Scared hell out of them. Anyway, that's my story.

Oh ya, and a couple of towns in the North have thrown around the idea of trans-polar cargo flights to and from Siberia. But none of them have landing strips long enough to accommodate the big Aeroflots. Decisions-decisions.

Here on the coast helicopters are essential. When I lived on the island of Harringtom Harbour, during 'freeze-up' and 'break-up' when we couldn't use the water taxi, helicopters transported folks back and forth to the mainland. I still have receipts for about 200 helicopter trips. Here in Kegaska, helicopters bring our medications from Natashquan, and serve as medivacs. I know about the medivacs because I was airlifted out last year on a helicopter all the way to Chevery. Finally, the Coast Guard and Transport Quebec use helicopters here as well to serve as fishing surveillance and to bring in technicians to change the harbour and communications tower lights and software. Oh, and the telephone and hydro folks come in on helicopters as well. The former helicopter pilot in Chevery, now decesased, was a much decorated US war hero in Viet Nam who flew 'copter sorties and rescue operations there. I've flown low over the coast with him, he was absolutely fearless flying the 'copter in bad weather.

An MI-26 hoisting a Chinook, which is no small helicopter itself!

Perhaps they could put a Tim Horton's in the back corner of the copter to derray costs.

I heard a comment that maintaining the roads in the major centers of Brazil have been abandoned by the state sincee the corporate community travels everywhere by copter anyways.

Ya, Brazilian's can't just just copy the plan in Ontario for road maintenance. The one's who can afford to buy four wheel drives and Hummers and drive through potholes the size of moon craters.
In winter it's fine, because potholes are filled with ice and snow and makes staying on the road a snap for even the junkiest of winter beaters.
