The new provincial budget eliminates this tax.

Apparently the opposition Tories believe that this will open all sorts of flood gates. Demands by special interest groups for lower taxes I guess, and what will the women want next? That special someone in my life suggested equal pay for equal work, but I'm sure she didn't mean it.

Sadly I cannot find the article from the Winnipeg sun with the critics quotes on line, so here they are,
"It is an election year and that's one way to attract the female vote, I guess I'm getting cynical about the choices this government makes."

-Myrna Driedger, Tory Health critic-

Ahhh crap here it is, the article.

Gary Doer's up for an election already? Sheet. It seems like just yesterday the NDP took power in Manitoba.

I wonder for how long a period this tax break will last? Does all political power flow from the point of a tax break? Is this just part of a cycle? Do opponents of the tax break think the N.D.P. bloody minded? How is this being reported in tory rags? With election looming, did this cramp the legislative agenda? Or is it light right now, or heavy?

shoot me, before I pun again.

It just dawned on me this evening that this is not an election year. At least not for the province. Maybe next year.

Weird that the opposition doesn't seem to be aware...

That's ok - I followed the link and discovered that the author of said article is none other than my cousin. I think I have to go and write a letter now (and cc it to his grandmother - she'll give him what for!).

If you needed another proof of the Liberal MPs' idiocy, watch today's Question Period on C-PAC, 23.00 AT, 22.00 ET.

I just caught the last five minutes of the QP today - Judy Wasylycia-Leis was asking Paul Martin if he'd consider following the example of Manitoba government and do something federally on eliminating taxes on feminine hygiene products. (I don't remember the exact phrasing.)

Just watch the faces of snickering male MPs behind Paul Martin, and watch and listen to Martin himself. Un-friggin'-believable. More specifically, the words 'pads and tampons' seem to be the ones that have caused the commotion.

Tres, I couldn't watch, and I need to be talked out of the last vestiges of respect I once felt for Martin (save me, sister!), so can you tell us what he said? Include description of snickers, body language, etc.

Paul Martin said, "We are constantly reviewing our tax policies, and we will continue to examine taxes on products such as those" while hurridly sitting down. He did have an amused look on his face, good thing I don't watch it live, I'd spend the quarter and toss a stringed cotton arrow at the moron.

The snickering was actually coming from the male MPs seated around Judy. Bloc guys.

If I were finance minister of BC and a woman opposition-side MLA asked me that question, I'd probably turn beet-red too.

I have younger triplet sisters, with me and my mom in the house on top of that, there was a week every month when Dad would um... be outside a lot.

She got those gigantic warehouse boxes of pads and tampon from Costco, Dad nearly got hives helping her unload the car.

All this from a guy who does my laundry and bakes cookies. Too funny.

(Y'know, it's hard to make that sound funny, isn't it? I really am just kidding.)

That's pretty funny, Trinitty. My father didn't even change DIAPERS much less go out tampon shopping for the other two females in the household! However, he did teach me how to cook breakfast, and he gave me "the talk" when I was a teenager. (Although I don't know whether "Just remember, Michelle, with the pill, if you skip one day you "blow" the whole month" is exactly the type of sex education that the Concerned Children's Advertisers have in mind...)

Of course, everyone should just order keepers for their family, and there will be no tampon or pad shopping!

Did I mention that The Keeper is, like, really REALLY amazing? I tried it and it was a dream. All of my misgivings and worries about this and that possible misadventure were blown out of the water. And no more pads or tampons to buy. Hopefully if this passes, The Keeper will also be tax exempt.

Ha, Skdadl, yes, we will have to send Doc on a menstrual sensitivity training course. To pass the course, you have to use "tampon", "pad", "vagina", "flow", "menstrual fluid", "menstruation", "period", and "cramps" in a 5 minute conversation about menstruation. Write a 250 word essay about menstruation. Have women say those words in your hearing until you can hear them without blushing. etc. etc.

Not really, Trinitty. First, the way cameras are positioned, behind Judy the viewers can see the PC folks, and I haven't notice anything unusual going on there - but granted, I might have missed it if it wasn't huge.

Paul Martin. It looked like the question awoke a schoolboy in him. You should have seen his face, half "I-am-professional-I-can-do-this", and half "hee-hee-hee". And the answer was terribly brief, he couldn't wait to go back to his seat.

Behind him - a highschool locker room. Incidentally, all men. They snickered a bit more openly than Martin himself and looked at Judy WL as if she cursed in the House, or made a major linguistic blunder. You know the look people give to somebody who suddenly shows nudity in public? They were kind of relieved that it wasn't them in her place. It's difficult to describe, really.

THANK YOU FOR WATCHING QUESTION PERIOD!!!!!!!

YES Michelle!!! I'm buying mine TODAY. They're only $40 at the Herb and Spice. I was wondering how yours worked out. Great to hear. All of my family members said "ew, no thanks". Losers. Call themselves...

ROTFL, Michelle.

Actually, I think we should make this part of a short entrance exam required of all new entrants to babble.

I was about to say... Nice save though

I wonder what some of their wives had to say about all that? The Liberal boys should grow up. If I can say "we'll look into exempting feminine hygiene products from taxes" out loud with a straight face, they should be able to as well. But they can't, so I guess we just have to question the sanity of the people that chose them as candidates at the nomination meetings...

Feminine Hygiene products should never have been taxed in the first place - and I'd like to point out, that when th GST came along, it was supposed to be on items considered to be non-essential. Show me one woman who thinks that pads and tampons are NOT essential items!

On the same note, hve you taken a good look at your dry cleaning bill lately? There is a discrepency there too. Case in point: I took in roomates two suits (pants and jacket) plus a pair of pants. The total came to $28. I took in two dresses,(one shift dress, one sleeveless with a jacket). The total came to $35. So I asked the cleaner, how come, he said it was because dreses have more material than suits. Considering the material on the hanger I had in front of me at the time - I beg to differ. And my suit jacket, more expensive than the roomies suit jacket - the difference between men's and women's suit jackets is what... sleeve length?? It's just flippin annoying as hell.

Has anybody noticed that the GST doesn't seem to be applied consistently? I've found that smaller stores charge GST on everything, whereas the bigger superstores actually code out the GST properly and do the batch-exemptions correctly, too.

it is of particular value to lower income women who have no choice but to purchase these products.
You mean that wealthy women do have a choice as to whether they use these products or not? I think periods starting is one of the key reasons women use more toilet paper than men (at least I hope that's the reason) - and pray that it does the job until they make it to the store!

Seriously, I can hardly wait until Doer takes off the tax Filmon put on diapers - now that is something you can't get away without using. And cloth diapers are great as long as you don't mind it if the kid has a rash and the place smells of urine. And the cost of laudry, and changing your clothes and bedding three times a day!

For you Manitobans out there.

Q: Why did Homer Simpson and his pal Barney come to Winnipeg?
A: They heard that Duff's ditch was filled to the brim.

Q: Why did Rue Paul come to Manitoba.

Of course, but the thing about a sales tax -- especially on a necessity -- is it's regressive, falling harder on the poor than the rich.
