This is new - May 30, 2008.

quote:
The Vatican has issued its most explicit decree so far against the ordination of women priests, vowing to punish them and the bishops who ordain them with automatic excommunication.

The decree, published in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, makes the Church's existing ban on women priests more explicit by clarifying that excommunication would follow all such ordinations. ...

Rev. Tom Reese, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, said he thought the decree was meant to send a warning to the growing number of Catholics who favour admitting women to the priesthood.

"I think the reason they're doing this is that they've realised there is more and more support among Catholics for ordaining women, and they want to make clear that this is a no-no," Mr Reese said.

Unionist, you anti-Catholic heathen! How dare you bring up the church like this.

You do realize we must be tolerant of the intolerant, no matter how loathsome their policies and practises are.

You got me, Stargazer. Actually, I made the whole thing up. Can anyone imagine the Church actually threatening to excommunicate anyone just for treating a woman the same as a man? I'm surprised I wasn't called on this right away.

The real story is about to break, according to my sources. Herr Ratzinger is to announce a radical change of direction. "The Church hath sinned", he will affirm in a papal bull entitled "De Peccatoribus Babblenses". As a historic act of contrition, His Holiness will abdicate the Fisherman's Throne and name a lesbian to take his place. "Two redemptions in one blow", the Holy Father was heard to murmur while painting placards for an anti-Bill C-484 demo...

You heard it here first.

Unforunately though, excommunication doesn't necessarily mean those affected will turn away from religion. Maybe they will end up casting their lot with the Anglicans.

We Anglicans have our own problems at present, rending ourselves asunder over the place of gays and lesbians in the Church. The only good news is that the "conservatives" (who aren't really conservative at all, but simply schismatic) are in a bit of a quandry, having alienated a large proportion of the moderates by their actions.

And Stargazer, while I have criticized unionist before over some over-the-top comments about religious groups, there is nothing wrong in posting an actual news item - particularly when done with no comment. As much as you may want to typecast religious progressives, you'll have to do better than that half-witted would-be satire.

On the substance of the original post, the very fact that BXVI finds it necessary to issue such a condemnation suggests that the pressure for change is growing stronger.
