From correspondents in London
October 01, 2005PRESSURE has mounted on London's police chief after the Home Office published a letter from him detailing a request to prevent an independent inquiry into the police shooting of a Brazilian man.
In the letter, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair suggested a change in the law in the wake of Jean Charles de Menezes's death so he would not have to provide information to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Mr de Menezes, 27, was shot seven times in the head at a south London Underground station on July 22 by police who feared he was a suicide bomber.
Just hours later, Sir Ian wrote to Home Office Permanent Secretary John Gieve to argue that revealing information about the incident to external investigators - as he was required to do under the Police Reform Act - could compromise police tactics and intelligence sources and put lives at risk.
