Gay.com (UK):
quote:
Two men have been jailed for attacking a gay man in Northern Ireland, although the judge ruled against claims of homophobia.

Stephen Devenny, 21, and Ciaran Rodgers, 18, were sentenced to three years and one year in jail respectively. Rodgers was also sentenced to a year’s probation at the hearing last week.

Both pleaded guilty to unlawful and malicious wounding after beating a gay man and apparently shouting “faggot” at him.

The 33-year-old man sustained serious head injuries during the attack, receiving hospital treatment and 20 stitches.

He also lost teeth during the attack and was hit over the head with a bottle in the attack which took place in 2004.

So, beat a man senseless while screaming 'faggot!' Nope, sure no hate crime there.

Colour me surprised.

I wonder what the stats for the UK are, re: anti-LGBT violence, and how it compares to other countries? Is there somewhere easy to find this, that does a country-by-country analysis and comparison?

It would be valuable to be sure to differentiate between Northern Ireland (currently part of the UK) and Eire (Ireland), currently an independent state. Not that there isn't homophobia in both, but the thread title does create some confusion.

Or to be even more accurate. The North of Ireland will do.
