Left-wing opposition parties have made strong gains in the second and final round of the French regional elections, according to exit polls.

The Socialists with allies won 50.1%, with the governing conservatives polling 36.9%.

French voters dump Chirac allies

quote:
"Le roi est nu : Jacques Chirac est défait sans excuse, sans circonstances atténuantes, comme un homme dont l'électorat connaît depuis trente ans tous les "tours". (...) Le désastre du 28 mars inaugure la fin du règne de Jacques Chirac, poursuit le quotidien.

voila.fr

First Spain, now France. The Right is on the run.

Will Nader be the next winner from the left?

Let's concentrate on Jack, first.

No election has been called, so I didn't mention Jack.

Fair enough. And you owe me big time for allowing a brief glimmer of hope for a Nader presidency.

That would rock. Never gonna happen in a million years, but that would rock.

Okay. Having used the the word "rock" as a superlative twice in one post, I am now officially too tired to stay awake. Nighty-night all.

Yeah, really. Those rockin' redundancies go far beyond your usual windbagginess.

I'm embarassed to say it, but I had either never noticed or completely forgot that Lionel Jospin had retired.

I was thinking this would have been a nice victory for him after the narrow 1995 defeat and the hassle of dealing with a particularly right-wing President.

Former President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (How a guy with a name that screams "aristocratic trash" ever got elected in a country like France is beyond me.) got decimated in his own region.

Somehow I don't see any comparison between Nader and the Zapatero's PSOE of Spain or the French Socialists. Both of those are very moderate "third way" parties who were very centrists when in power recently. They are entirely comparable to the Democrats in the US.

The only comparison to Nder in French politics might be Arlette Laguiller's Lutte Ouvriere which always get about 4%.

Except I doubt that Laguiller takes money from right-wing organisations.

You're not serious are you! Comparable to the Democrats! ( A party whose leader supports Iraq!) Let alone all the social policies supported by or past by them (well at least the French, say 35 hour work week! I can totally see the Democrats going for that!)

No I think they are closer to Nader, just not the same, they're definitely not Democrats though.

She also has more than a passing interest in building a long-term political movement. And none whatsoever in promoting her own cult of personality.

Now what's wrong with Naderism?

I find that praying to the bust of Ralph Nader that I made from old Corvair parts is a very edifying way to start each morning.

You know, I don't give a damn about Nader one way or another any more. Could we possibly talk about France?

So, how much does this mean? How left are these "Socialists" anyway? I'd kinda heard they were pretty dashed faded and corrupt. Better than Conservatives no doubt, and a nice sign of Europe shifting left again coming after the Zapatero victory in Spain, but no great shakes in and of themselves.
However, I'm fairly ignorant on this. Anyone better informed?
