I've read three or four right now. (plus the minority that I had read as they were being built. I've been on this site for about a year).

It will take me a while... I'll get through most of it.

That's great, 500 Apples. I highly recommend Rape = Power to get a sense of the dynamics that have played out here over the years. I'm glad this resource is being used!

I think you'd also want to know that I responded to something you wrote in the earlier Duke thread here.

I see you've been living up to your screen name.

I've been away for a few days. Very sick, no internet access after a move, and some bad news in the family. Thanks for this archive, writer, it's absolutely fantastic. Checking my e-mail today, I see a whole lot has happened. I'm pretty sure oldgoat has taken care of a lot of it while I was gone (thanks, oldgoat).

From the one or two threads I've caught up with this morning (long ones which have since been closed) I think it's obvious that there are a few men around here who need to do a lot more reading and a lot less posting in the feminism threads. Some of the players may be different, but the dynamic remains the same and something needs to be done about it.

writer, what you did over Friday and the weekend was an excellent way of bringing that to light.

Wow, that Rape = Power thread is a significant thread, thank you so much writer, for bringing forward to our attention.

deBeauxO's 3 types of men made a huge impact on me.

quote:
1) Rapists, those for whom rape = power. They are not the majority but since their behaviours and actions multiply and often escalate, these men harm a great number of women.

2) Deniers/enablers ... call 'em what you will. They may not rape, but they use the benefits and privileges that the threat of rape / power over women brings them.

3) The men who love and respect women and who need women to love and respect them. They are appalled and outraged that other men have appropriated a virility that can be used for pleasure, joy, comfort, procreation ... and deploy it as a weapon

Then when someone asked about the #2 type of man, there was an excellent fleshing out by BCG.

quote:
*Men who minimize or deny that sexism is an issue.

*Men who deny that violence against women (which includes rape of course) is a systemic problem in which the perpetrators are almost always male.

*Men who think that since they aren't negatively affected by sexism/patriarchy that it's not their problem. Men who "understand" sexism theoretically but do nothing to change it.

*Men who catcall and leer at women in the street, in the workplace, in public spaces. Men who don't tell their male friends it's wrong to catcall and leer at women.

*Men who benefit from selling women useless crap to "protect" us from sexual assault.

IMV, most men fall into the #2 category.

Finally, deBeauxO's sums it up for me with:

quote:
And then there's "well, it wasn't that big of a deal that he did XXX." Get over it.

That is what women are taught.

That truth makes me very angry and sick.

ETd to take out commentary that is now over here at the rabble reactions thread as I agree this is a resource that should not have too much commentary as it invites commentary.

I may be mistaken, but I think writer meant this to be more of a resource thread than a thread where we rehash incidents from other threads, so that we can use this as an easy reference. There are other threads, including one or two in rabble reactions, where we can discuss what happened this weekend. Let's not do it here. (And I include myself in that, since I did it two posts above this one. Sorry about that. We'll keep it on topic after this. )

Ending Violence against women.

One of the stats in the report showed that violence against spouses is actually up.

Less resources for BC women since 2004, BC Liberals diverting away from judicial system.

Was there a particular reason why these old threads were linked to?

Duke lacrosse prosecutor faces disbarment

quote:
oldgoat: Of the threads you're resurrecting writer, I guess I may as well jump in on this one first of all to say no, I'm not going to just close it now for length.

These threads are timely and still have a lot of good life left within them. I also like that they preserve wisdom (and in some cases not) from babblers of yore. If anything underscores that these discussions are useful and timely, take a look at the Duke lacrosse thread I just closed for length.

Sentencing for rapists

quote:
Michelle: I've reviewed what happened over the weekend while I was away sick. I see that a lot of feminists were very unhappy with what happened in several threads, and it was kicked off by the Duke rape thread.

I also see something else that is happening. We have very few anti-racist people of colour posting on babble. Those that we have, including bigcitygal, are marginalized, isolated, taunted, and basically treated like shit by privileged men who think it's their right to trample all over whatever discussion and analysis that women of colour and their allies on this forum are interested in having.

bigcitygal tried to really talk about the Duke rape case from an anti-racist feminist point of view, and she was completely pilloried in that thread. I'm incensed at this. I'm incensed at myself for not stopping it, and for not even completely recognizing it.

It is inconceivable that a forum such as this one, which claims to be feminist, anti-racist and generally anti-oppression, could allow this to happen, and I feel a great deal of responsibility for that ...

This board is really unwelcoming to anti-racist people of colour.
