July 31, 2006 issue - Israel launched airstrikes on Lebanon in response to attacks by Hizbullah earlier this month, and George W. Bush called it "self-defense." But what to tell the Turks, who over the last week lost 15 sol-diers to terror attacks launched by sepa-ratist Kurds from neighboring Iraq? Many Turkish leaders are pressing for cross-border tactical air assaults on the guerrillas. But Bush, fearing yet another escalation of the Middle East's violence, urged Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to hold off. "The message was, unilateral action isn't going to be helpful," says a senior U.S. official, describing the 15-minute phone conversation. "The president asked for patience."

A bit OT, but I get a kick over these "pundits" who speculate that Turkey could play a prime role in a mutinational peace force in Lebanon. Don't these people know any history? At the very least, the symbolism for Arabs would be adding insult to injury.

The Turkish television channel NTV has reported that "high level military meetings between Turkey and the US are taking place in Turkey, Iraq and in Iraqi Kurdistan, to study plans of attack against the PKK" adding that according to its information "the US forces have drawn up a plan to attack the PKK hidehouts close to the border triangle between Iraq, Iran and Turkey.

So you know Josh - It's not just pundits going after turkey for the international force... Condi Rice was the one who was quoted with saying a turkish/egyptian force of 10k troops would be needed, and in the same breath told Turkey to be patient when dealing with Kurds. The 2 faced nature of this USian gov't is beyond painful.

They say they will only be attacking PKK guerillas just across the border, but here's what a representative of Kurdistan's governing party says:

quote:
At the same time, a member of the Kurdish Democratic Union - Barzani's party - has reiterated Kurdish leaders' rejection of any Turkish military intervention in Kurdistan, stating that "should one Turkish soldier put his foot into Kurdish territory we will adopt a very clear position."

The head of Turkey’s armed forces said publicly on Thursday, in the military’s sharpest language to date, that he was prepared to conduct operations in northern Iraq to crush Kurdish rebels hiding there.

It is a frightening situation for the United States, which is struggling to keep the war in Iraq from spreading beyond that country’s borders. And while the threat is not immediate — it would require approval from the country’s diverse Parliament — the issue has grown more urgent here in recent weeks, spurred by highly publicized funerals of soldiers killed in battles with rebels and by calls for action from politicians of all stripes.

Turkey challenges the Kurds in the north, Iran supports the Shiites and then Saudi Arabia and potentially,Syria support their fellow Sunnis.

Then,we have Dick the ...well, dick, wanting desperately to bomb Iran while he still can.

Lovely. Even Jimmy Carter couldn't have made a bigger mess.

Several thousand Turkish troops crossed into northern Iraq early Wednesday to chase Kurdish guerrillas who operate from bases there, Turkish security officials told The Associated Press.
Two senior security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, said the raid was limited in scope and that it did not constitute the kind of large incursion that Turkish leaders have been discussing in recent weeks.

Well it's official, the complete destabalization of Iraq is complete.

The US can't even secure the green zone in Baghdad and now the world has to rely on the Turks to maintain order??

Any bets on when the Kurds in the north announce their sovereignty from Iraq?

Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has suggested that a vote could be held next week in Parliament to allow military incursions into Iraq, and Sadullah Ergin, a senior government official, said today that the motion could come as early as Monday, according to the state-run Anatolian News Agency.

On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported from the town of Sirnak that Turkish warplanes and helicopters were attacking positions along the southern border with Iraq that are suspected of belonging to Kurdish rebels who have been fighting Turkish forces for years.

The prospect of military action by Turkey has been raised following a recent upsurge in violence blamed on Kurdish rebels. On Wednesday night, a policeman was killed and six others were injured in a bomb attack in the Kurdish city of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey, the Anatolian news agency reported.

Turkey's military said it had sent ground troops into northern Iraq Thursday night in an operation aimed at weakening Kurdish militants there, the first confirmed ground incursion since the United States invaded Iraq in 2003.

The Turkish General Staff announced the action on its website on Friday. It gave no details of how many troops went or how long they would stay, and said only that they would return once goals had been achieved. Private NTV television reported 10,000 troops were involved and said they had pushed about six miles into Iraqi territory.

A Turkish analyst, commenting on NTV, said the attack appeared aimed at dealing the Kurdish militants, the Kurdistan Worker's Party, a surprise blow before the snow melts and the guerillas make their traditional spring advance into Turkey to attack Turkish troops. The analyst said the operation would likely last between three and four days.
