I'm going to this right now. My friend Tanya is singing with the Solidarity Notes.

Here's the story.

Sunday Morning last week had a feature about this -- including audio of the concert, and reminiscences of people who were there. A remarkable story.

Having attended the '52 concert as a 5 year old, I spent a couple of hours in the VPL last week trying to find a photo stuck in my memory of Paul with his arm around the border obelisk. A few interesting discoveries followed. It was not in either of the dailies. The Sun, which was less odiously right wing in those days had a short report buried in the back pages to the effect that Left Wing Singer's Crowd Closes Highway. The Province simply ignored it. The photos found in this thread and the one I was looking for came from contemporary labor papers.
In the course of the hunt I read some current headlines, editorials and funnies. Deja vu! The headlines of McCarthy in his heyday were frighteningly similar to the repression of the "with us or against us" war on terrorism. The editorials were complaining of US unilateral actions. In the funnies, Pogo Possum, unbeknownst to himself, was being presented as the most credible candidate for President. Le plus ca change...
At yesterday's concert there were a few highlights. Ronnie Gilbert was a living icon who overcame apparent infirmity with wit and verve, Leon Bibb took us to task for not educating our kids in the history of our struggle resulting in the relatively low turnout, Seattles's total experience gospel choir electrified the crowd, and Danny Glover's reading of the fifty year old words of the great man himself struck a painful nerve.

Judes! I thought we were taking today off

My day off was spoiled by this.

(not really. it's mostly funny, through the tedium)

Oh come on, Audra, we did our best to make it fun. Take it as a compliment - you get more threads dedicated to you than any other babbler!

Not much less odiously right-wing, by the sounds of it.

I understand your feelings of deja vu. I had much the same reading Victoria newspapers of the 1920s and 1930s. Of course, the pace of change in Victoria is mighty slow.

Pogo was one of the best Presidential candidates since WWII. I'd have written in his name if I could. A couple of years ago, I heard of a poll of young children, most of whom thought Mr. Rogers would make the best President. Similarly, either Bob Homme or Ernie Coombs would have made fine Prime Ministerial material.
