Next Tuesday is March 1st and Women's History Month begins.

In 1911, some Europeans celebrated March 8th as International Women's Day. In 1979, Sarah Lawrence College began a dynamic Women's History project & encouraged people to set aside celebrations for Women's History in March. The US Congress, spurred on by Senator Barbara Mikulski from Maryland, acted in 1982 (I think) to establish a Women's History Week in the US. Since 1987, in the US, we are encouraged to celebrate Women's History Month. Comparable celebrations and observances exist in Canada, Europe and elsewhere.

The Greeks had a word for it--Clio, a feminine & semi-divine figure, is the muse, the inspiration of History. She is "the Proclaimer" and mother of Hyacinth. In art, she usually appears with a chest of books at her side.

One poet wrote:

Clio
She knows her history;
True feminine grace
Of knowing where you come from
And what's really your place.
She plays with Time itself,
Knows all of what we've done.
Has been with us through all times,
And never forgot where we begun.

Query: What shall we do this March? Why shall we do so? What ought we to expect?

Lo, this dreamer cometh!
