Russia says its new weapon will make U.S. missile defence useless quote: MOSCOW (AP) - Russia has designed a "revolutionary" weapon that would make the prospective American missile defence useless, Russian news agencies reported Monday, quoting a senior Defence Ministry official. The official, who was not identified by name, said tests conducted during last month's military manoeuvres would dramatically change the philosophy behind development of Russia's nuclear forces, the Interfax and ITAR-Tass news agencies reported. If deployed, the new weapon would take the value of any U.S. missile shield to "zero," the news agencies quoted the official as saying.

Not that revolutionary new weapons are needed. In real life, even if the US missile defense thingy worked at the limited task it's supposed to be capable of, which it doesn't, the theoretical capabilities are so limited that if I'm not mistaken any of these or combinations would beat it: --Painting the missile black --Slightly higher speed --Unpowered final stage; i.e. getting the aim finished above the atmosphere and falling in cold --Releasing a few mylar decoy balloons or chaff --Using cruise missiles instead of ballistic --The MIRV warheads they already have --Using lots of missiles Heavy innovation isn't required. Say, I wonder if the Russians will quietly sell this tech to China? They could use the cash.

Perhaps a more apt example of what Al Q. is getting at was the incident where a Soviet Mig 25 was flown to Japan in the 70's(early 80's) when the pilot decided to defect. US engineers immmediatly dismantled and studied what was the most sophisticated and as yet uncpatured Russian fighter jet. Reports came out about the high-tech, yet also somewhat primitive nature of its construction. For instance the Soviet metal workers who assembeled the plane neglected to grind down the exterior rivets of the plane's fuselage. This got some media play as an example of the primitiviness of Soviet technology in comparison to US aircraft. Later, some smart US engineer figured out that the unground rivets actually served to make the mig 25's radar image less clear, and therefore served a anti-missile function. This thread has become far too reasonable. We need more wild speculation about what new doomsday weapons the Russians are working on to grind the free world under their iron heel.My theory: giant fighting robots. Or ninjas. Who deflect missiles with their bare hands. Or ninjas in giant fighting robots. You heard it here first, Rumsfeld and Friends.
