quote: (London} Police in the south of England are looking for two people after a gay priest was attacked by a man wielding a metal baseball bat.Investigators say that the Rt Rev Dr Barry Rathbone is lucky to be alive. He suffered two broken ribs and several broken fingers in what police are calling an unprovoked homophobic attack. Rathbone, 37, is well known in the Bournemouth area. He works for the Beacon Project, a ministry to people with HIV/AIDS. The clergyman had spent the evening at a local gay pub and had picked up a burger on his way home. As he sat in a park, eating the burger, he was approached by a man and woman. Rathbone said that the man shouted gay slurs and then hit him with the baseball bat. He suspects the pair saw him leave the pub. He said they could not have known though that he is priest because his clerical collar was not visible under his scarf. Rathbone's attackers escaped and police are appealing for witnesses.

Thank you Hephaestion for posting these postings. I wonder how difficult it is to do that, in the sense of having to know that hatred daily. I spoke with a friend of mine, who lives not far from Colorado Springs, about the fear I had for her after reading the articles in the May Harper's Magazine. I was shocked by her response, "yes, this is ordinary to feel so hated". I suppose I knew that. I remember my friend Mick who was gay, I was 15 and I didn't really know anything but I sensed he was different because of how other boys, bully boys, treated him. Some years later when he came to San Francisco to visit I realized he was gay. He died of Aids when no-one spoke of it and I never even knew he was ill. All of this saddens me deeply.

I would agree that it's not all that progressive, but honestly, sometimes I wonder if we aren't making a huge, naive assumption that everyone is somehow reachable by words. I honestly believe that some people, like this, can really only understand a good sound beating. Anything else would be ignored, or worse yet taken as proof that the problem is even bigger than they thought.

Well, you never become "used to it", but it tends to recede into the background; you're aware that it's there, but it's not on your mind every second of the day. But then something happens like the Aaron Webster case in Vancouver, or my friend Brian's murder in Jamaica, that brings it all into the foreground again in a very painful way. Honestly, I'd have to say that the percentage of my LGBT friends who have been gay bashed, been discriminated against, or had slurs thrown at them outnumbers the ones who haven't. By a substantial amount, too.
