A group of Yukon high school students who attended a peace demonstration in Alaska last year have been labelled a threat by U.S. Homeland Security.

In which case let's start a petition to ensure these kids have all the $$$ needed to ensure their university education is paid-in-full!!

Good on them.

One tactic used to resist the draft was to submit material to be added to your file at the Selective Service Board, since by law they had to file everything and anything you sent them, with the intent of bogging down the system. People took out magazine subscriptions, book of the month club memberships, bought encyclopedia, sent bricks, etc, giving the Board address.

Sounds like it's time for everyone to go to an antiwar demo.

Maybe it's getting worse, maybe not. Most of this stuff has been going on a long time. Take another look at the crap that Joe McCarthy got up to. Right now, the media has caught on to some of it, so you're hearing about it. In a few months, everyone will get tired of it so we'll hear about something else.

Even in the bad old days of the 1950s, I don;t think the US government would have regarded Yukon school children as threats to US national security. The level of paranoia today is light years beyond anything I've ever seen.

I think a lot of the problem is that it's not just some right-wing pundits who have conflated being anti-Bush with being "anti-American"... I think the White House has, too. Ergo, anything critical of G.W. Bush, or his policies, is a "threat to national security".

... if I were to mention the phrase "Night of the Generals" in this same post, would it attract the notice of Bush's spybots? Or would the regular ol' CSIS/CIA lurkers have to turn me in? Oh well, it's not like I ain't on a million lists already...

Think not? Did you ever read, "The Enemy Within" by J. Edgar Hoover? There was a Commie under almost every bed.

Claiming that critics are enemies is an old strategy. They'll get away with it for a while. Remember, the Bushies are only the surface manifestation of the real problem, which is the corporatist power behind them. The corporatists have loyalty only to money and they will jump ship at a moments notice. When head offices start moving to China, you will see changes in your government.

Seven Days in May. . . .

Cougyr - I see where your coming from and I don't want this to seem like raising the ante in a poker game but there was no Guantanamo concentration camp back then and extraordinary rendition was in its infancy.
