I operate the amputee web site at http://amputee-online.comSome of the people using the site are offended by the picture on the main page, suggesting it may traumatise new amputees even more. I think it sends a strong anti-war message and that is what is offending them more than anything. As non amputees can you visit the page and let me know what you think ? Thanks

I can make arguments to both of your points. A: I think it would be hard on someone dealing with something so painful to see that photo. It might bring back a lot of fresh memories and images. B: I can also see that some people don't want this kind of unnecessary, horrific sacrifice shown because it sure might change some peoples minds about things. Grim reality has a way of doing that. And if I was a warmonger I certainly would see this as a type of propaganda that will harm my cause and I’d want it kept under wraps. War-types would see people changing their minds over these wretched realties as bleeding heart idiots. But to me personally it just shows what I knew in my heart all along was going on in Iraq. The dead might be the lucky ones by the end of this war. These soldiers are casualties but because they aren’t dead their plight is brushed under the carpet and they are expected to be pleased at being alive. They are told that America appreciates their sacrifices. Americans don’t even know the sacrificing that’s going on. But I bet if you piled up all the lost limbs on the front lawn of the White House people might grasp the depth of sacrifice being made and realize the lie they are being sold.

Yes -- every once in a while I remember that we mostly focus only on the deaths when we look at casualty figures, among Iraqis and coalition troops both, when the stories of the wounded are stories in themselves, of a different kind, ongoing, and so much more numerous. The more we value humanity, the more we should be able to look at any other human body and see our own dignity and fragility both. There is nothing offensive to me about a photograph of caring medics calmly helping another human being back from any kind of trauma. It's the war that is offensive, and this is why, but as for the man lying there in need of us, and the medics helping him -- they is us.

Yes. I would bet that most of the people who are "offended" at the brutal nature of the image are, in fact, offended at your lack of support for their war. They know that you (and we) would laugh at them if they said as much though, so they trot out some lame "what about the children" type reason for their reaction. Were they similarly offended by the infamous photo of a burned corpse sticking up out of a shelled Iraqi tank? Probably not. That said, and while I agree wholeheartedly that the war needs to end, I do wonder whether you'll be doing yourself or your organization any favours by using your website to stump for this. If I were simply looking for a list of resources, or a community forum for amputees, I think I'd do a bit of a double-take. Do you answer to a board or council of any sort, or do you own the organization, so to speak?
