I'm using the occasion of another "Survey of Canada" in the Economist magazine for this posting -- the topic being how Canada looks to the ROTW: Rest Of The World. For the Economist: quote: Peaceful, diverse, tolerant (in June gay marriage became legal throughout the country)—and with long-term riches to boot. If this isn't “cool”, what is?
Their main points seem to be that we actually like immigration & have sound public finances, which makes us unique. (Seems plausible...?) But three storms threaten -- disparity in earnings West to East, Quebec independantisme, and relations with the elephant. As for POGG: that's Peace, Order, and Good Government, our supposed motto -- because it conditions the residual federal legislative power in the Constitution. (It's actually the term used around the Empire in the last two centuries, as a compendium of Parliamentary powers, when the novelty of colonies required actually trying to describe this. But now it seems special to Joe Canadian.) The piece: http://economist.com/surveys/displaystory.cfm?story_id=5243159 (I can only read the Intro: rest's not free.)
