The Sex Work Sessions

Two Old Hoes talk Straight about Prostitution
Thursday March 20 Tory 1-93 7pm

Carol-lynn Strachan and Monica Valliquette have, between them, worked a half-century in the world's oldest "profession". From the streets to
escort services, they've seen it all, and likely have done it all!. Valliquette has written on the topic for See Magazine while Strachan has appeared in the local news several times as a result of her dedicated activism. These two
prostitutes' rights activists bring to the table extensive knowledge and experience regarding the issues faced by local sex workers in Edmonton.

Screening of Live Nude Girls Unite with special guest director Julia Query
Saturday March 22 V-112 (V wing lecture theatres near CAB) 7pm

In 1997, strippers at the Lusty Lady club in San Fransisco successfully unionized despite fierce opposition from the club's management. The first
club of its kind to unionize, the Lusty Lady was forced to examine racist scheduling policies, illegal firing procedures and lack of safety protocol for its dancers. The struggle was documented in Live Nude Girls Unite, a film by Julia Query and Vicki Funari. Winner of the Audience Award at the San Fransisco International Film Festival, LNGU is a hilarious and fabulously triumphant account of a struggle that hopefully will spread far and wide. After the film screens, Exotic Dancers' Alliance member and film director Julia Query will be speak.

(Presented with assistance from the APIRG, the Women's Studies Chair, the Industrial Workers of the World, the Students' Union and the International Socialists)

From the FUSS website:

quote:
JULIA QUERY FLIES AGAIN! (FOR REAL THIS TIME!)
TALK CONFIRMED: Friday April 11th. 7:00pm. UofA Campus, Business 1-09.

On Friday April 11th on the University Campus, Julia Query, filmmaker, comedienne, former exotic dancer, labour activist and producer/star of the acclaimed documentary Live Nude Girls Unite!, will be speaking at 7pm in BUSINESS 1-09.

As many of you know, Julia Query was scheduled to speak on Saturday March 22 but was not allowed into the country because of "improper ID." Though she updated her ID that day it was too late to fly in to Edmonton for the talk so we screened the film without her. We are very excited to announce that she will be coming on April 11th for sure.

Join us for a rare chance to hear testimony from one of the organizers of the first successful exotic dancers union on the continent. Admission by donation.

Presented in coalition with the Alberta Public Interest Research Group, the Student Worker Action Group, the Women's Studies Department, the University of Alberta Student's Union, the International Socialists and the Industrial Workers of the World.
