This is really horrendous.

What a dirty war. War crimes on both sides.

It's time for all foreign invadors to leave the country. We've screwed it up beyond repair, and we're not going to be able to fix it. Continuing our war crimes will only incite them to continue theirs.

Without western interference, the people of Afghanistan will rise up against their oppressors. If we would stop funding this faction and that faction, whomever it's fashionable this week to support, then these people would work out the issues in their country themselves.

Comparing kidnapping 23 missionaries from a country that's pulling out anyways to any NATO balls-up by calling them "war crimes" is a bit of a stretch.
Taliban acts like that actually increase support for us to stay there until the locals actually can "rise up" on their own.

But that's how fascists operate as a rule. They tend to wanna march into other countries and declare local people the enemies of freedom.

The fact that it's not our country, or the Yank's by wild coincidence, tends to make murdering Afghani's appear to be a bit of overkill as our 24 percent prime minister mouths the words "democracy" and "freedom" from afar.

In the wake of the hostage release, reports indicate mounting anger against the hostages and their church for going to Afghanistan in the first place, and allegations South Korea paid $20 million in ransom:

quote:
They might be in for a lukewarm welcome as critics fear that the deal could spur more abductions with Afghan officials saying the South Korean govt paid a hefty ransom to free its nationals. [...]

When quizzed about the hostage drama, 23-year old Chung Kyung Joon said:"They did a great disservice to the government and to the people and also disgraced the honour of the country. They must pay a price for that." [...]

Many are also angry at the Saemmul Church for defying travel warnings and endangering its volunteers. The father of one of hostages is even considering legal action against the church and the government, which some believe dragged its feet during negotiations and could have saved the two hostages killed by the Taliban.

There's also international anger directed at the South Korean Government amid claims by some Afghan officials that South Korea secured the hostages' release with a multi-million dollar ransom.

One foreign diplomat said negotiations started out at $20 million. Meanwhile, critics say this might set a dangerous precedent and could spur more abductions.

If the South Korean government paid a ransom, it would be another example of a government placing its national interests before that of the war on terror. The American government did not seem pleased with the actions of South Korea because it negotiated with the Taliban and, as the article pointed, sets a bad precedent. What seemed like perpetual sympathy for the United States following 11 September is gone, I think. Governments around the world are no longer being intimidated by the United States to participate in its war on terror.

I think the American government lost much credibility and leverage because of the way it has handled the war in Iraq.

The South Korean people should be angry at this religious group. The idea of missionaries going to Afghanistan to preach the gospel and maybe do a little charity work is repugnant. It screams to Afghans that NATO's presense is not about setting up a secular state but setting up a state that is open to Christian missionary work.

Canada is a good example of what happens when one allows missionaries in. The Koreans probabaly just wanted to build a residential school to educate Afghan children about the real world.
