The ongoing protest by "les intermittents du spectacle" (freelancers in the performing arts) continues, and threatens to target the Cannes festival. http://www.cbc.ca/arts/stories/frenchprotest091203

This problem here in Canada sounds similar. I guess the real question we should be asking is why the CBC is ignoring the home-grown protest, while giving 3 articles to the one in France?

Simply because there is no arts protest in Canada - or in Québec - with the scope or resonance of the protest by "les intermittents du spectacle". Wish there were. In France the protests, which pretty much scuttled Le Festival d'Avignon, are front-page news.

It is an inspiration to draw on.

There were the beginnings of a significant protest by freelancers in North America (mostly in Québec, and in Boston) about web rights, and the CSN was involved in stuff around that, and I was too, but it seems to have petered out. Perhaps the across-the-board labour protests will re-activate cultural workers' issues.

Good points lagatta. Maybe unions need cultural departments to both collaborate with artists and their unions, and to facilitate cultural resistance. See this article and imagine the impact of a larger theatrical strategy employing many, many more characters.
