The latest CUPE National Secretary-Treasurer's Report was in March 2004.

http://www.cupe.ca/www/nsto

The 2003 CUPE Convention added Article 7.12 to the CUPE Constitution.

7.12 The National Executive Board shall have complete authority to borrow monies and to pledge any funds or properties of the Canadian Union of Public Employees as security for such borrowing.

Don't know about the current situation but CUPE national has had problems in years past simply because the dues are set too low compared to other unions.

Are you refering to the fact that there is no report fro year 2004 from the secreatry/treasurer in this section and wondering what is the reason or are you worried that CUPE may not have enough money due to reasons such as low union dues? or any other concerns?

Actually CUPE has never been in better financial shape. Not sure why the link to the CUPE constitution. At their convention every two years an audited report is given as well the treasurer gives an annual report to the regions as well as quarterly report to the National Executive that is made up of representation from across the country.

Leftwingalbertan:

How can CUPE be in better financial shape after it has lost thousands of members?

"We have lost 4,000 members so far in the health sector in B.C. We are poised to lose another 2,000 who work for the Vancouver Health Authority. We stand to lose thousands more if direct patient care is contracted out.

This year we also lost more than 6,000 health care workers in Alberta in representation votes.

The Charest government in Quebec is targeting health care and social services workers and we could lose thousands of members in that province.

The loss of thousands of members in three provinces will potentially cost us millions of dollars a year in revenue."

CUPE has something like 560,000 members, so losing even 10,000 is part of the ebb and flow of membership levels.

Josie:

Are the new addition to the CUPE Constitution (Article 7.12) which I quoted above and the following relevant to the financial shape of CUPE? CUPE had borrowed money from the CEP and CUPW.

"We have not had to cash the Communication, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada and Canadian Union of Postal Workers cheques, but if strike activity continues at this pace into the fall and winter, we may need to do so."

CUPE_Reformer - if you read the actual documents and websites you've linked to, you'll see that they say, quite clearly, that the finances are much better than they have been in recent years.

So, I'm wondering, what relevance does the financial state of CUPE in 2001 and 2002 and 2003 have when they say they're much better off in 2004?

Why are you asking "Is CUPE National in financial trouble?" while linking to sources that all say, "yay, we've turned the corner, things are better now"?

the grey:

"In 2004, our national defence budget was $5.6 million and virtually all of that money went out the door. Things will be much the same by the end of this year.

As I write this, expenditures from the defence fund are equal to revenues...

Since convention 2003, we have spent over $8 million supporting CUPE members walking picket lines or fighting the threat of strikes or lockouts... CUPE National Secretary-Treasurer"

Money in, money out
