Through a Haaretz.com article on French Jewish singer, Shirel, who played the role of Esmeralda in the musical, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, there are glimpses into the dark world of anti-Semitism in France.

I have no problem, from what I know, of establishing that these racist outcries are the product of Arab French louts. It is sad to see this kind of racism able to live and prosper in a democratic, enlightened country like France.

"Today, calling someone

`dirty Jew' is already part of

French slang. It's trendy there to

say that Jews are Nazis. It's very

difficult today to be a Jewish kid

in a French school. "

Only the French government can be blamed

for this, because if it had dealt

with the root of the problem,

perhaps the situation would be

different."
