quote:
It was an American soldier aboard an armoured vehicle in front of us, stuck in a traffic jam on the outskirts of Baghdad. He gestured disapprovingly towards our driver for approaching with some speed, then looked to his left and angrily stuck out a middle finger. I followed his gaze and there was a child of no more than eight or nine sitting in a chair in front of the open gates leading to the garden of his house. He was shouting angrily, with a clenched fist of defiance, cutting the air with swift and furious right hooks.

Worth the read

In that rather detailed documentary on the Civil War that PBS aired a few years ago, there was this short section on why Southern soldiers were fighting. Few of them actually owned slaves, few had anything of substance to lose in the "states rights" argument.

A Confederate prisoner, when questioned as to his motivation, answered his Northern captor, "I'm fighting because you're here."

While everyone looks to Iraqi politics to try to determine just who the players are in the resistance, I think much of it is due to the "Because you're here" factor.

It's the most natural response of all. Animals do it, people do it, "GET THE FUCK OFF MY LAWN!"

Stolen? Nope, it was bought and paid for.

You might notice as well there is nothing about being tax-exempt in the treaty.

I think it's more along the lines of "Take that boot off my throat".

Hmm. Even aware that it's bait, i can't resist a brief note. There is nothing in Treaty 8 about paying taxes either. It all has to be read by inference. And the fullest explanation of what one side signing the treaty understood were its terms appears in the meticulously researched book, The Original Meaning and True Intent of Treaty 8.

I think Courage's point is that the Iraqi response is elemental, natural, practiced by most living things, and moreover, to be expected.

If you want to doubt that humans are territorial creatures, think back to any time you saw someone take something of yours without permission and how fast the adrenalin kicked in when you yelled at 'em not to take it.

Notice my use of the phrase 'people do it'. This would apply to Iraqis as fellow members of the strange and curious biped mammalian species known as homo sapiens sapiens. That said, it would appear from empirical observation that the instinctual and emotional response to an aggressive incursion seems to be reasonably common among many species of life on this planet. This, in my opinion, does not constitute a 'lower' form of behaviour, but simply one which must be accounted for in any objective appraisal of, or ethical formulation about, human beings.

Perhaps, and I certainly have no problem oweing the former owners whatever it is they would ask of me.

I'm quite fond of a Tshirt I see in the storefront of a Native oriented shop down on Queen St. West. The picture is of a group of (not sure what tribe) warriors suited up for battle and the caption says, "Homeland Security: Fighting Terrorism Since 1492." Nice.
