Revealed: U.S. Soldier Killed Herself After Objecting to Interrogation Techniques

quote:
She was Army specialist Alyssa Peterson, 27, a Flagstaff, Az., native serving with C Company, 311th Military Intelligence BN, 101st Airborne. Peterson was an Arabic-speaking interrogator assigned to the prison at our air base in troubled Tal-Afar in northwestern Iraq. According to official records, she died on Sept. 15, 2003, from a “non-hostile weapons discharge.”

I read this yesterday. one must wonder why she chose suicide rather than exposing the issue to public view. As a devout Mormon,it appears an unusual reaction.

After mulling this over for a while,I have to wonder if she was assisted in her decision.

Probably because it would have been impossible to do so.

Most of what goes on in Iraq never sees daylight. Soldiers are simply unable to access media or other traditional sources of the whistle they need.

The power of military superiors to clamp down on information leaks is huge. Apart from monitoring all military phone calls, blogs, email, and other means of communication "for security purposes", commanders can also insure that someone not going along with the game plan will end up doing the most hazardous possible duty.

Just as one example, Eden Delgado, who claimed conscientious objector status (it was his legal right to do so) was sent out on night patrol in Iraq without a loaded weapon. This would scare anyone, and might amount to a death sentence.

I wonder if she became depressed by what she saw and the little she could do about it. Might this explain the suicide? I don't think mental illness is any respecter of one's religious belief.

I meant that her death was presented as a suicide. She appears a person of character and she may have upset the apple cart,so to speak.

This is a harbinger of the backlash to come.

As American soldiers make their way home, such implosions will be more common, with families and communities paying the price. America will have a taste of that which it has inflicted upon the world.

You can't export "freedom" without becoming an importer yourself.

(I do feel bad for this girl, as she was mormon, and all of the mormons I've met have been great folk. OTOH, fsck her torturing a$$. )

I concur. I wonder if she committed suicide by the proverbial shotgun blast through the back of her head.

That kind of suicide is usually reserved for commanding officers, though it is certainly possible in this case. Remember David Kay's "final walk in the garden"?
