Apologies if there's already a thread on this, I couldn't see one. Our asshat prime minister, John Howard, has just passed a bill that allows ASIO to arrest folk without giving reason. Basically they now have carte blanche to act on a suspicion, without having to answer to any kind of watchdog or governing body. The main no-no in these new laws is "sedition", but no-one from the government has kindly stepped forward to explain exactly what they mean by "sedition". It all seems very open to interpretation, and as such it would seem that they can do what they like without having to justify it to the people.

Recently, American activist Scott Parkin was arrested and sent back to the US. Now, I don't know enough about him to know fully what he speaks of, but that's just the point- he was here to *speak*. That's all. These days, apparently, you can be arrested just for talking. This is utterly terrifying.
