The telephone operators are faster than the politicians. They say "Liebenau Stadium" when they answer the phones at the "Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium Graz."

Arnie, would you execute an Austrian?

Why did they name the stadium after him in the first place, and give him all those honorary citizenships and rings of honor?

Did they not know from day one that he was a reactionary jerk?

It's hard to believe there's that much of a backlash. Austria has always been a very conservative country, especially outside the bigger cities.

Maybe so, but they abolished the death penalty in 1950. If, as in most countries where it's abolished, there had been a period without any executions leading up to this, the last non-wartime executions there were probably pre Nazi era. Even if they were actually conducting them right up to 1950, most living Austrians can't remember a time when it was a reality in their country. I imagine their reaction is not dissimilar to Americans' reaction to beheading.

Arnold has told his former townsfolk to cease and desist using his name to promote the city, and apparently has returned the ring of honor that was presented to him by Graz council.

He is not reactionary in all matters as he is pro choice. Is there a record of his views on the death penalty? A person can be against the death penalty yet refuse to grant clemency.

???????

I suppose they could with some legalistic mumbo jumbo such as, "A Governor shouldn't interfere with the courts." But what's that when they have the chance to stop the taking of a human life?

Clemency must be decided on a case-by-case basis; amnesty- what the majority of posters here expect for death row inmates- can, however, be granted to all death row inmates without deciding each case on its particular circumstances.

A person can be against rape and yet refuse to stop one. It's called "cowardice".

Well, WR, I know he hasn't granted amnesty either, so the logic escapes me.

There's nothing worse than deliberately and senselessly taking a life. On both sides.

Looks like they should be careful what they ask for. They might just get it.
