Just read in the NYTimes that Microsoft has thrown in with Toshiba. Meaning that all those X Boxes out there will play the high defintion dvds. Gamers could ultimately be the ones who decide what format wins the war. Here's what they say..."But if enough Xbox 360 users started watching HD-DVD movies on those machines, Disney, Fox and other studios that have committed to making only Blu-ray discs might be persuaded to make movies in the HD-DVD format, too. This shift could delay any resolution to the format showdown. "The momentum is behind Blu-ray, but there's no way to write off Microsoft" and the HD-DVD camp, said Joe Wilcox, a consumer electronics analyst at Jupiter Research. "They have the potential to swing the momentum back the other way, and that could delay a single standard." The clock keeps ticking and ticking and ticking...

Well if a whole bunch of "old" Xboxes are going to get junked, they can be "re-cycled" with Linux. This particular Linux distro is aimed at multimedia activists:Dyne:bolic [ 09 January 2006: Message edited by: radiorahim ]

The market for HD-DVD is there. I have HD and I don't buy or rent DVDs anymore - why would I, when I get far superior picture and equal sound from free TV?JVC has developed a disc, by the way, that combines an ordinary DVD and HD or Blu-Ray (I forget which) on one disc in different layers, so stores would be able to stock dual-format discs and buyers wouldn't need to worry about their discs being obsolete when they upgrade their equipment.

Why would you still buy DVDs? Here's why: HD-DVD have only just announced what movies are coming out on HD. 50 titles by Spring. There's still a dearth of HD content. Anyway, why rush to buy a new format that may go the way of the Betamax? As for Xbox - HD-DVD will be an add-on that you pay extra for... Read this...

I don't buy or rent SD DVDs because of the superior HD picture on TV. HD/Blu-Ray DVDs, with their increased bit rate over broadcast/cable/satellite HD, may bring me back - but not before the price is down to a few hundred dollars for the player. I expect my primary DVD purchases will be TV series shot on film in the pre-HD era that will be remastered in HD from the original negatives, as was done for Seinfeld in preparation for the SD DVDs.
