Burnaby Douglas because it used to be Tommy's BC riding and we lobbied hard to get Douglas into the name. [yes there is a street named Douglas but it is hardly a main street]

Can I nominate the City of Calgary for having the absolute worst riding names in the country?

  • Calgary Centre
  • Calgary Centre-North
  • Calgary West
  • Calgary East
  • Calgary Northeast
  • Calgary Southeast
  • Calgary Southwest
  • Calgary Nosehill

The only way it could get worse would be to accurately change the name of Calgary Nosehill to Calgary Northwest.

Out here in Nova Scotia, the riding Bill Casey will win as an independent, Cumberland-Colchester-Musquoidoboit Valley is almost as bad as that one, M. Spector!

And you know, B.C. is supposedly where all the creative people settle after rolling around loose in the rest of the country.

Yet we have this textual abomination, and the first two Vancouver Canucks jerseys that scream the opposite.

I think the worst in Manitoba is Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia because it is just the name of three suburbs rammed together. Just call it Winnipeg West.

I think Churchill is also a bad riding name because Churchill is far from the largest city there. Either call it Thompson, do one with a bunch of hyphens and give Thompson top billing, or call it some region name like Northern Manitoba or Rupertsland.

Come to think of it, St. Boniface isn't a very good name because it also includes a lot of the Southern suburbs that don't have a cultural connection to what most people would call St. Boniface

Hee. In all seriousness, the only federal riding that springs to mind named after a former PM is Louis-Saint-Laurent in Quebec. I didn't know that Burnaby-Douglas was named after Tommy - neat!

Surely there's a happy medium between the dry-as-dust "City-Direction" format (eg Calgary Southwest, et al) and the "Let's-Cram-Six-Names-In-There-So-Nobody-Feels-Left-Out" format, which I consider to be the worst offenders. Someone mentioned the West Vancouver--Sunshine Coast--Sea to Sky Country, Algoma--Manitoulin--Kapuskasing, Abitibi--Baie-James--Nunavik--Eeyou and Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodobit Valley abominations, but let's not forget such gems as:

Montmagny--L'Islet--Kamouraska--Rivière-du-Loup
Rimouski-Neigette--Témiscouata--Les Basques
Haute-Gaspésie--La Mitis--Matane--Matapédia
Montmorency--Charlevoix--Haute-Côte-Nord
Ancaster--Dundas--Flamborough--Westdale
Lanark--Frontenac--Lennox and Addington
Bonavista--Gander--Grand Falls--Windsor

I always feel sorry for the poor House clerks who have to rattle off these ridiculous riding names during votes.

As a point of interest, the House clerks only recite riding names during votes when the MP in question shares a surname with another MP, or where their surname sounds so similar that an error might be made when recording the division.

Thus you get "Mr. Layton", "Ms. Chow", etc. but also "Mr. Martin - Winnipeg Centre", "Mr. Martin - Lasalle-Emard", "Mr. Martin - Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca" and so on.

And of course, "Mme Thibault - Rimouski-Neigette—Témiscouata—Les Basques." (Pay attention to that, BTW -- the first one is a hyphen, the next two are dashes. That's because Rimouski-Neigette is the name of a single MRC, and so are Témiscouata and Les Basques. No word on whether en-dashes or em-dashes are preferable.)

Anyway, here's something I wrote a month or two ago about riding names:

My first two campaigns were in the mellifluously named riding of Verdun—Saint-Henri—Saint-Paul—Pointe-Saint-Charles. It's now named Jeanne-Le Ber, only 26% of its former length, which is good because the process of filing nomination papers and many other processes in the election office involve writing out the riding name numerous times by hand.

(Jeanne-Le Ber is an example of the Quebec predilection, recently spread to federal riding names in Quebec, of using an arbitrary personal name, usually with some connection to the riding, instead of a geographic reference. No offence to Sister Le Ber, who I understand to have been an 18th-century recluse and embroiderer from Pointe-St-Charles, but I think a name like Verdun—Le Sud-Ouest would be more appropriate for a riding that covers, you know, the boroughs of Verdun and most of Le Sud-Ouest.)

I've since borne an interest in the length of riding names. There are currently 308 federal ridings in Canada. The mean length of their English-language official names (in total characters, including spaces and punctuation) is 17.3. Interestingly, 17 is also the mode of riding lengths: there are 24 ridings with exactly 17 characters, including Calgary Southwest, AB (Harper's riding), Hamilton Mountain and Timmins—James Bay, ON (NDP ridings), and the lovely Tobique-Mactaquac, NB.

The shortest names are those of four ridings which have 5 characters in the name: Laval (QC), Brant (ON), Essex (ON), and Yukon (YT).

The current longest name is West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea to Sky Country, BC. Astonishingly, this name is a changed name, from the much more manageable West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast. (You will not be surprised to learn that this was Blair Wilson's idea.)

WV-SC-StSC, nevertheless, is two characters shorter than my former riding name of V-SH-SP-PSC. Among the ridings of the 1996 representation order, it was tied for longest name at 50 characters, with two other Quebec ridings: Beauport–Montmorency–Côte-de-Beaupré–Île-d'Orléans and Kamouraska–Rivière-du-Loup–Témiscouata–Les Basques. However, it's an isolated case (along with one or two other outliers, such as Bonaventure–Gaspé–Îles-de-la-Madeleine–Pabok, which was whittled down to Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine) -- the average length of Quebec riding names actually grew in the new rep order, from 17.97 to 18.28. Despite Quebec's reputation for cramming in every MRC into the name, though, only half (38) of Quebec's riding names are above the Canadian average.

Here's a summary table:

Another foolish one, of course, is Western Arctic. So you have the riding of Yukon (in Yukon), the riding of Nunavut (in Nunavut), and just when you think you have a pattern going... Anyway, Dennis Bevington introduced a bill to rename it Northwest Territories, but it was just before the writ drop. Maybe he'll take it up again -- riding name bills are generally fast-tracked.

I also don't really understand "Central Nova" and "West Nova", especially the French versions ("Nova-Centre" and "Nova-Ouest"). Is there a place called "Nova"? Is that a commonly used name for continental Nova Scotia that I'm not aware of? If not, why don't they call it Nova Scotia Centre and Nova Scotia West (Nouvelle-Écosse-Centre and Nouvelle-Écosse-Ouest), like New Brunswick Southwest?

In the Montreal suburb of Côte-Saint-Luc there's a corner of rue Tommy-Douglas and rue David-Lewis. I remember an election sign photo taken at that corner a few years back.

Well, what do you expect for someone who once spent a cozy autumn evening snuggling with his boyf and trading names of ridings and MPs.

"Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, sugar bean?"
"Bev Shipley, Tory, sweetheart. Winnipeg North?"
"Why, Judy Wasylycia-Leis, NDP, angel nose." Etc.
