Happy Oktoberfest, Michelle, and all Germanists on babble. What do vegetarians and/or non-beer-drinkers do for Oktoberfest?

A friend in Frankfurt sent me two links for left-wing German dailies, to practise your German after your class. www.fr-aktuell.de is the Frankfurter Rundschau, more "linksliberal", rather favourable to the "rot-grün" coalition. It has a link to an interesting but scary piece about Neo-Nazi-skinheads (yecchh). Junge Welt is further left, but pluralist, and is from Berlin. www.jungewelt.de .

Greetings from Kitchener-Waterloo!

Being a recovering Oktoberfester, I sometimes attend an AA meeting close to the detox unit at Grand River Hospital and offer some support to those seeking help. However, Oktoberfest has lots of cultural events (including a 10Km foot race) for people not attracted to beer tents, sauerkraut and sausage.

You might want to have a peek at the Oktoberfest Web site here.

Oh, is it Oktoberfest this weekend? Hee, I didn't realize...

That's one German thing my mother's family doesn't "do" anymore, not for any particular reason though. My mom and dad used to go with friends to it, but I don't even know if it's held in Kingston anymore.

Heh. I've never been. I hate beer. And sauerkraut. And sausages. I'm a bad ethnic German.

I believe it starts on the Friday before Thanksgiving.
