quote: Karzai criticizes coalition's strategy against militantsLast Updated Thu, 22 Jun 2006 11:48:44 EDT CBC News Afghan President Hamid Karzai has urged coalition forces to reconsider their tactics in "disarming terrorism," saying the deaths of 600 people in his country in recent months was "not acceptable." Afghan President Hamid Karzai is urging coalition forces to take aim at people and groups who finance militant organizations. (CBC) Karzai said Thursday that hunting down militants on the ground — the main focus since the U.S.-led coalition drove out the Taliban government a month after al-Qaeda's attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001 — does not stem the roots of terrorism. Instead, he urged coalition forces to take aim at people and groups who finance and supply militant organizations such as the Taliban. "I strongly believe ... that we must engage strategically in disarming terrorism by stopping their sources of supply of money, training, equipment and motivation," said Karzai. 'It is not acceptable for us that in all this fighting, Afghans are dying. [Even] if they are Taliban, they are sons of this land.' -Afghan President Hamid Karzai"It is not acceptable for us that in all this fighting, Afghans are dying. [Even] if they are Taliban, they are sons of this land."

I agree that Karzai should keep talking.Did everyone here (even Boom Boom) miss The National last night? They showed footage of some Canadian unit in Kandahar. The soldiers pushed through draperies hanging in doorways when they did not smash down people's front doors, entered and did presumably whatever they wanted in the homes of the Afghans. On this particular raid, no "Taliban" were found so the males in the village were rounded up for a stern talking to. Some helmeted and sunglass wearing CF spoke to the kids through a translator: "You shouldn't join the Taliban. My soldiers are good shots and if you join the Taliban we will kill you." Two kids I would guess about 10-12 listened. One older boy (16-18) hid his laughter behind his hand. That soldier might be a great guy in other respects, but he deserved to be laughed at and perhaps cuffed upside the head by the village elders. I'm not across the board against our involvement in Afghanistan. I am definitely enraged and humiliated at how this command unit conducted itself.

He did WHAT?! It's a bloody good thing I missed that episode. If I was there, or if I ever meet that clown, he is going to get cuffed, I can msot readily assure you.
Some of them are one step forward, three freaking steps back types... Christ. The National Eh? Well, I will be scouring their site. I need to know who...

SunTzu, on re-watching the clip I see that Lt. Craig Allcott in fact had removed his helmet and pushed his glasses to the top of his head. He also said they would "wind up dead". Memory is a funny thing..............I hope this link works. If not, go to the first link and look for the words: Video James Cudmore reports for CBC-TV (Runs 2:15). Play: RealVideo edited out link. Anyone know how to link to RealVideo sources? [ 23 June 2006: Message edited by: siren ]

"Killing's less than 1/2 our job," Canada reassures Karzai quote: "Killing or capturing those who continue to threaten the security of Afghan people is just one aspect of our efforts here,'' said Maj. Nancy Hansen, spokeswoman for the Canadian-led Task Force Aegis Friday."Over half the effort associated with the operation is geared toward reconstruction and humanitarian assistance."
That's called multi-tasking. Besides killing Afghan youth (who are posthumously dubbed "Taliban" in lieu of an inquest), Canadians are actively providing root canals to Afghan villagers, running fitness classes, and dispensing drugs in the countryside. That's right. Bringing drugs to the Afghans. quote: Teams of doctors and dentists are to visit the communities to give people medical check ups, dispense drugs and give health advice.
Back on the killing front, although the killing of hundreds of (ahem) "Taliban" makes for good headlines, it appears these may have all been suicides. How else to interpret this gem by Major Nancy: quote: "The coalition forces here are very supportive of the president and his policies and recognize that many more Afghans have died than coalition forces,'' she said, adding the deaths of up to 600 Afghans in recent weeks is the fault of the Taliban."The coalition does not take responsibility for the deaths of those Afghans," she said.

quote: Mustafa Alani, director of security and terrorism studies at the Dubai-based Gulf Research Center, said Afghanistan’s current situation was precarious.“I would not be surprised if Afghanistan progresses to the level of Iraq’s violence. There is an anti-American sentiment in Afghanistan now. That’s where you see recruitment by militants,” he said.
SourceAnd just to remind us of the freedoms our soldiers are fighting to defend in Afghanistan: quote: The Government issued a directive through its intelligence service on Tuesday which banned Afghan journalists from filming or interviewing alleged members of the Taleban. The directive also included a ban on reports "that aim to represent that the fighting spirit in Afghanistan's armed forces is weak". The Afghan media were also told not to lead with stories about "terrorist activities". The directive was later said to be a request by Karzai's office reflecting "the need to help the nascent media sector in Afghanistan to approach the complex issue of terrorism and terrorist activities in a principled manner".

Further to this topic on Karzai: quote: Karzai’s call for different approach rings trueCommentary by Carmen Gentile, International Correspondent for ISN Security Watch (28/06/06) Afghan President Hamid Karzai last week lambasted Coalition forces for what he called their misguided approach to the "war on terror," and for good reason. The Afghan who was virtually handpicked by the US to take the reins of his unruly country following the demise of the Taliban let his supporters know he felt a new approach was needed to fight an unconventional enemy and that the current course of action was “not acceptable.” "I strongly believe […] that we must engage strategically in disarming terrorism by stopping their sources of supply of money, training, equipment and motivation," Karzai told a news conference last week in the capital, Kabul. Karzai then expressed his dismay....
