The first "official" NDP leadership occurred today in Toronto but you'd never know it looking at the party website which has virtually no information on the contest. The leadership race update page has an announcement from the summer informing prospective candidates that they can call provincial office for a registration form but there's no information on who has registered as a candidate and no information about campaign events such as the nine official leadership debates, their dates and locations. There's also no information encouraging people to join the party in order to vote, no information on cut off dates, not even any information on how the leadership election is going to work.

We have just seen an American election demonstrate the importance of the internet in spreading information and building capacity but these lessons appear to have been lost on the ONDP.

If the NDP were on the ball we would have seen live streaming of today's leadership debate on the site and the event uploaded onto YouTube in the coming days but there's not even any announcement that the debate was scheduled.

It's sad when Wikipedia has more details about the leadership election process than the party's own website.

Today's CTV report says the debates will be in Sudbury, Kingston, London, Ottawa, Timmins, Hamilton and Thunder Bay. I would assume this could not be posted on the party's website until the schedule was approved by provincial council today.

I hope the ONDP has learnt one thing from yesterday's debate - get a bigger room. I stood for the entire 2 hours at the back in a room that could have qualified as a sauna.

Also, we were told not to put in any more questions as the moderator had plenty and then towards the end she said, `well I guess we`ll stop now as I have run out of questions`!

(I also had the misfortune to stand near Peter Kormos who made derogatory comments about the candidates all through the debate,Perhaps he was grumpy about having to stand also, or perhaps that`s just him?)

On the up side I think I lost 7 pounds and all that sweating must have been good for my skin. I too had to stand, and was heading to find the form for a question when the announcement was made.
