Ingland and France are set to go in the Euro 2004.

I watched the 2000 Euro Cup in France with my mother-in-law, who's a sports fan of sorts. She was ready to give up a couple of times during the last two games, so I had to remind her of a saying we have from baseball, "Si c'est pas fini, c'est pas fini".

England, France set for Euro showdown

quote:
France has depth at every position and the talent to repeat as champions. It's starting strikers Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet – two of the world's best – could give England's banged-up and suspect defence serious fits.

Henry, who plays with England club Arsenal, lit up the Premiership this season and is arguably the most dangerous striker in the game. Trezeguet is no slouch either. The Juventus star is a world-class finisher and has been known to leave a defender or two in his wake.

The French attack, which includes Zidane and skilled winger Robert Pires, hopes to exploit England's flimsy back end, which will be without starting defender John Terry.

Yeah, France-England will be well worth watching! Yesterday I was at the corner of St-Laurent and Rachel, the area where the Portuguese first arrived in Montréal. Though most have moved on to neighbourhoods further north or to the suburbs, there are still a a fair number of Portuguese businesses and sport cafés and bars. Since Greece won the first match, a parade of cars with Greece flags and regalia had come down from Park-Extension to honk their horns and thumb their noses at the Portuguese. But it was all in good fun - both countries are on the poorer fringe of the old EU and there is no serious hatred or animosity between them. Not like England vs. France or either of the above vs. Germany....

I'm wondering how many South American players, especially from Brazil and Argentina, have EU citizenship so that they can play in Euro 2004. Or would their home countries resent that?

More pre-game chatter, on Maxifoot

The match starts in a few minutes.

There are times when I'd like to have cable TV.

In my neighbourhood, the big France fans have been Algerian (and others from the Maghreb) because of Zidane. He scored both goals!

There is a lot of background coverage in the Guardian http://football.guardian.co.uk/euro2004/matchreport/story/0,14583,1238166,00.html

Their page on the series: http://football.guardian.co.uk/euro2004/0,14602,1220295,00.html - interesting articles even for non-fans of footie.

Al Q, I don't have cable either. But I take it that you haven't got any Italian caffés with vociferous and opinionated fans?

None that I know of. We have things called "sports bars" here. I've been in one once.

From what I can tell, they're big, noisy places with basketball, NFL football and golf played on big TV screens as background ambience for guys with their ball caps on backwards to try picking up overly-gelled floozies who laugh too loud.

Hey! I had to eat really bad pizza today to get to watch the match.
And I had to pretend that I support Italy as well, Uncle Enzo will banish me from the pizzeria if he ever finds out that I don't.
