Great story, Pankaj! Ha! the management-science type at U of T doesn't like it because it doesn't fit his theories -- maybe he should talk to a few of us lowly workers -- the tales we could tell!

I have seen three famous publishers/editors-in-chief repeatedly throw tantrums in front of any number of staff -- sorry, management scientists, but it works for them. I've never understood why, but it does ...

I'm sure you're the shining exception to the rule, Markbo. BTW, do you need a secretary? I'm a great secretary.

Did anyone else notice that the researcher referred to secretaries of bosses as "girls"? After my "girls in green" remark on the other thread, I probably shouldn't be bothered so much by it, but the assumption that first of all, secretaries are going to be female, and secondly, that they are to be called "girls" really reminds me of when my mother first started working as a secretary in "typing pools", where bosses would call them by their first name, and "girls" and "sweetie" and whatnot, while expecting the "girls" to call him "Mr. So-and-So". Heh.

Could we extend this research to leader types in all fields, politics, government; I want my way, come hell or high water (hell to follow). What adolescents we have for leaders. I declare war on... whatever gets in my narcissistic way. This sure does fit in with how I see the world being "managed".

Personally, what I got from the article was that ambition and success require good self-esteem.

Dr. Robert Hare, Canada's foremost expert on psychopathy, indicates in his research that many executives fit the profile of the so-called "subclinical psychopath".

That is, they are extremely narcissistic, do not care about the feelings of others, and will act strictly in their own gain with no regard to others.

Sadly, our governmental emphasis on imparting free-market character to our economy creates a stronger reward structure for the kind of behavior in an executive that would get most high-school kids' fingers smacked.

This section is for rabble specific feedback. I'm not sure why other stuff gets posted here. I'll move this to "earning and spending."
