coming up to 40-year anniversary of the events of May 1968, and the Nouvel Obs magazine is running a daily news review of day-by-day events from the press of April-May 1968:
http://tempsreel.nouvelobs.com/speciales/le_quotidien_de_1968/

major events leading up to May include German student movement, disruption of student assemblies by right-wing groups, and strikes at Nanterre campus with Daniel Cohn-Bendit

but some of the most interesting stuff includes the other daily French press items from that time:
dispute between US and Vietnam over place in list of countries to hold talks (France not included):
Vietnam talks
, S. Africa announcing it will not go to Mexico Olympics, Air France first accepting Visa card (up to 3,000 francs), De Gaulle vs. the US, etc etc

I will post these regularly this month

I'm glad you are not restricting 1968 to France - remember the Prague Spring, the Mexican student uprising (that and the Black Power US athletes got in the crosshairs of the Olympics), a lesser known student and popular uprising in Pakistan (see Tariq Ali's recent article in the Guardian), and much more.

The French Communists killed the alliance, which rank and file workers supported, because the PCF couldn't tolerate a genuine revolution that they couldn't control. It was the cynicism of the PCF leadership, not differences between students and workers.

That is for sure, especially with massification of the university at the time. Before, only a small elite could attend. Most uni grads would become "salariés".

So why did the Communist Party of France fail to support the students?

Because they had a vested interest in the status quo as does any parliamentary party.

Well, that hardly seems fair. Many Parliamentary parties have supported revolutionary activities in the streets. Perhaps you have heard of Allende? Chavez?

so, perhaps there is another reason.
