Danica Patrick is scratching her head wondering, ... wtf did Bernie Ecclestone intend by his latest idiotic remark ?
from Sports Illustrated
quote:
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Danica Patrick is upset at Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone and confused by his comments likening women to "domestic appliances."

Patrick received a telephone call from Ecclestone last week during which he congratulated the Indy Racing League rookie for her performance at the Indianapolis 500, but also reiterated remarks he had made during an interview at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the U.S. Grand Prix was being held.

Among the comments Ecclestone made in the interview and to the Roscoe, Ill., native was that "Women should be all dressed in white like all other domestic appliances."

"I just didn't make sense of it," Patrick said during an IRL teleconference this week. "I was surprised, I guess, somebody would say that to me. And the days after, when it actually came out in the press, people were asking me 'What do you think of that?'

"I was like, 'You know what he told me? He said that on the phone.'

Patrick said some of Ecclestone's comments were positive and complimentary, which made the exchange more perplexing.

"I can't believe that he would say it to me over the phone, not to my face, but directly to me," she said. "I was a bit confused. ... So I don't really know what to think about it.

"I don't know if he was talking about someone else or the majority or what, I'm not really sure. Or, maybe that's his real feeling.

I dunno, Danica. The rich old fool is known for cryptic comments, but this one has everyone stumped. I'm wondering if there might be some U.K. expression or idiom that puts some context to the otherwise nonsensical words. Anyone ?

He doesn't have me stumped. Reading on to his earlier comments, I'd say that he is a sexist bore and a dinosaur.

Dinosaur Bernie's chew is now on his other foot.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Danica Patrick got another phone call from Bernie Ecclestone, and she remains puzzled by this series of exchanges after the Formula One boss likened women to "domestic appliances."

"He said that ... he didn't mean to be harmful to me," said Patrick, who received a phone message from Ecclestone when she got off a plane. "He said, 'I wasn't trying to insult you. Quite the opposite, really."'

Ecclestone's first phone call surprised her.

"All I know is he seems like he's trying to make amends," the Roscoe, Ill., native said. "I guess that's nice of him to try and at least make an effort to call and correct things. But, on the other hand, where that may be proper slang or a good joke in another country, we obviously didn't get it here."

The language of the article itself is rather interesting to me.

quote:
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Danica Patrick is upset at Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone and confused by his comments likening women to "domestic appliances."

My question is, when a male sports personality is dealt with in a strange and off-putting way, does the media (in this case, AP) observe that he is 'upset' regarding the situation when he expresses bewilderment? And if not, is it really the case that Danica Patrick was 'upset' by the exchange in a distinctive way? She was certainly perplexed according to her comments, as anyone might well be, but I don't see anything in her statements to suggest she was emotionally distraught. It seems one of those rather subtle areas where adjectives have their particular gender-coded usages.

I think she handled the offensive comment very well. She didn't get angry and say something nasty to him. I probably would have ripped him a new one(not very productive I know but I just can't help it when I'm angry)!
