It's a tough choice. Well, luckily CNN and Spike are right next to each other in the channels here in Toronto.

Okay, I'm kidding, I'm kidding. I'll be watching. Anyone else? Might be interesting this time around.

This dilemma is perfect for Picture in Picture. Put CSI on and but Bush in the PIP view... listen to CSI and get the jist of the State of the Union from watching Bush.

edited to add I'm not kidding

I don't really get why he shakes everyone's hands coming in. Doesn't he see them every day? Get on with it already! (See? I'm already cross just watching him, before he's even opened his mouth. )

Listen closely to what Bush says about Iran. If he tries to hang a Saddam Hussein mask on Ahmadinejad or if he warns of the growing threat of Iran's WMD program or if he stresses Iran's connections to terrorists like those responsible for 9/11, we may be watching a sequel to Iraq.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. Although, he's really going to have to reach out to the Democrats today if he wants to get anything done.

I have to admit, his opening is gracious and nice, about Pelosi.

Just curious - I'm noticing that Pelosi, sitting behind Bush, is clapping at everything he says, even stuff that isn't even close to progressive. Is it a protocol thing? She's clapping to increased enterprise, not government, no raised taxes, etc.

Heh. Oh wait. I typed too soon. After one of the things he said, she didn't clap, and they panned to Hillary Clinton, who had this priceless expression on her face, an obviously disapproving smirk with pursed lips.

"We need to settle the current illegal immigrants in our country, without animosity and without amnesty."

Furious clapping on the part of Democrats and Republicans, including the supposedly progressive Pelosi.

Wow.

Immigration is a hot button issue. You clap for something like that regardless. I've met people from Wisconsin who seem otherwise liberal.... ask them about Mexicans...

This is true.

Now he's talking about the Middle East and making noises about Iran.

I've given up trying to interpret Pelosi's vigorous clapping for some stuff and nothing for other stuff. The vigorous clapping is for some of the more warmongering stuff, but then, Democrats are just as responsible for Iraq as the Republiscum, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

At one point in his speech they zoned in all of a sudden on Rice. She was leaning forward with what I realized after a moment was an intense look of concentration on her face, but it was startling for a moment because she looked utterly pissed off.

How is that here in Alberta it's over and your still watching it in Toronto?

Anyway -- he's about to introduce 'Merkin heroes to prove what a great country it is over which his gracious goodness presides.

And I thought Condi looked like she wanted to kill and eat a small animal.

She looks hard. The job under Bush has really aged her in a short period of time. She's got a real stern look tonight.
They could of just put right into the casket and not even bothererd with the embalming fluids, she looked already prepared.
Scary

What a bizarre spectacle.

Bush's hand-picked Cabinet appointees, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Supreme Court justices, real-life American heroes sitting beside Laura and Lynne.

The speech reeked of American exceptionalism and hubris served up with platitudes and apple pie.

I'll take the partisan heckling of the Canadian House of Commons any day.

Poor Nancy. I think she was trying to clap for the good stuff but the Bush speechwriters had it all tangled into one long windy run on sentence and she had to wait for the end to lead the Dems in agree or disagree. I mean, a new take on immigration is good, and without animosity is good..clap clap. Oh shit, he threw in the amnesty thing. Chew off more lipstick, frown, silently curse those clever scribes.

And Condi always looks like she wants to pull the head off a puppy. Tonight she looked particularily able to do so.

Are they shooting any new episodes of CSI Vegas ?. They all seem like re-runs to me. I'll take Marg Helgenberger over that nonsense anytime.

Yes, I agree. As when Bush started babbling about alternative energy, switch grass, etc. Pelosi was clapping and about to jump up and Bush ended with "nucular nergy". She looked like she wanted to sit down, but how can you?

The heroes bit was especially heavy tonight -- 4 of them, right at the end to bring the whole event to a rousing bipartisan clapper.

That's why they put her in a "diplomatic" role!
