I saw The Vagina Monologues for the first time last night. It was being held as a part of the V-Day College Campaign. More than 500 universities held benefit V-Day productions of TVM, raising money and awareness for local community orgs which work to stop violence against women and girls. This one went towards Transition House, and V-Day's Spotlight on Afghan Women.

The production is incredible, and everyone who was born with or born from a vagina needs, positively needs to see it. Or read it.

I'll soon have a review up that you can read.

Did anyone else see TVM for V-Day? What did you think? Have you seen it elsewhere? How were the audience reactions?

But what about C-section babies? Sorry, couldn't resist.

I read them, different, but in my opinion a little over-hyped.

I read The Vagina Monologues as well, and like Trinitty, found the hype greater than the content. Perhaps it's different in performance, but to me, the text was uneven. Some parts were very touching, others left me unimpressed.

Despite that, I think the premise is great and the fact that it brings such positive attention to women, their bodies and violence against them, is awesome.

I had just finished reading Cunt a few days before, and the difference was astonishing. Both have core messages of "Know yourself," but TVM has none of the 'Men Are Evil, Women Should Rule All' vibes that Muscio gives out. This was nothing but woman positive, WITHOUT anti-man - even the rape and FGM pieces were positive in the sense of raising awareness, and were about the women, not about the men.

There were several pieces that were not in the book that were in the play, and vice-versa. Also, some of the pieces that I'd sort of skipped in the book were produced very effectively, and made me sit up and take notice more.

I thought it was great Keep talking!

Overhyped in the sense that I had heard about it for a year or so leading up to me reading it, read news stories on it, saw reports about it on tv, heard about it on the radio, I finally read it, and I didn't find it gripping or stirring, etc.

No bad by any means, but just, well, not moving. I totally agree with andrean though, it's great that it's promoting awarness of our bodies, un-sqeamishing the word vagina, and helping fight violence against women.

For V-Day celebrations UNB students are demanding a women's centre on unb campus - The campus community is really hyped about V-Day, stuff is happenning on campus - panels on feminism and queer issues - women's law student society had feminist conference last week - and the Vagina monologues are playing, too. A very exciting time for a small, isolated place like Fredericton.

If you're interested - checkout the UNBSRI posting below!

(UNB has no women's centre - no space for the LBGT group on campus - no phones out-doors, although buildings are locked after 11pm - and six women have reported being attacked or assaulted on or near campus over the past three months!!!)

Please email UNB President Elizabeth Parr-Johnston to express yourself on this issue.

Thanks!

V-Day in the U.S. is holding its 2nd annual Stop Rape Contest right now - a project of Eve Ensler, the playwright who wrote Vagina Monologues. They bring 60 women finalists from around the world to New York City to present their innovative ideas to stop rape. I was extremely fortunate to be the only Canadian finalist last year and it was such an amazing experience to be with so many great women. Never before felt so connected to women globally. In the evening they held a benefit performance of the Vagina Monologues at Madison Square Gardens (sold out last year) with all the proceeds going to V-Day anti-violence initiatives. Jane Fonda gave an additional $1 million donation so they raised 2.5 million. 40 quite famous women did the benefit, which you really must see live to appreciate. Last year an Afghan woman removed her burqa with Oprah's assistance. I got to meet Gloria Steinem, Queen Latifah, Marisa Tomei and so many other cool women. At the conclusion they announced the winners who received funding to make their projects come true. I was again lucky enough to have my idea selected to receive a grant. I was able to spend last summer writing Authentic Boys/Safer Girls: A teacher's guide to helping boys break free of gender stereotyping thanks to V-Day and the Feminist Majority Foundation.

My roomate is putting on a production of TVM on march 7,8,9 at UBC in the SUB theater. The last show will fall on International Woman's Day. She has been baking -to raise funds- heart shaped cookies that say Puss, Vag, HooHoo, and Cunt for days, they sell quickly. She also ordered in many chocolate-vagina-on-a-sticks, a fun treat for all.
