I saw The Vagina Monologues for the first time last night. It was being held as a part of the V-Day College Campaign. More than 500 universities held benefit V-Day productions of TVM, raising money and awareness for local community orgs which work to stop violence against women and girls. This one went towards Transition House, and V-Day's Spotlight on Afghan Women. The production is incredible, and everyone who was born with or born from a vagina needs, positively needs to see it. Or read it. I'll soon have a review up that you can read. Did anyone else see TVM for V-Day? What did you think? Have you seen it elsewhere? How were the audience reactions? I had just finished reading Cunt a few days before, and the difference was astonishing. Both have core messages of "Know yourself," but TVM has none of the 'Men Are Evil, Women Should Rule All' vibes that Muscio gives out. This was nothing but woman positive, WITHOUT anti-man - even the rape and FGM pieces were positive in the sense of raising awareness, and were about the women, not about the men. There were several pieces that were not in the book that were in the play, and vice-versa. Also, some of the pieces that I'd sort of skipped in the book were produced very effectively, and made me sit up and take notice more. I thought it was great Keep talking! Overhyped in the sense that I had heard about it for a year or so leading up to me reading it, read news stories on it, saw reports about it on tv, heard about it on the radio, I finally read it, and I didn't find it gripping or stirring, etc. No bad by any means, but just, well, not moving. I totally agree with andrean though, it's great that it's promoting awarness of our bodies, un-sqeamishing the word vagina, and helping fight violence against women.

For V-Day celebrations UNB students are demanding a women's centre on unb campus - The campus community is really hyped about V-Day, stuff is happenning on campus - panels on feminism and queer issues - women's law student society had feminist conference last week - and the Vagina monologues are playing, too. A very exciting time for a small, isolated place like Fredericton. If you're interested - checkout the UNBSRI posting below! (UNB has no women's centre - no space for the LBGT group on campus - no phones out-doors, although buildings are locked after 11pm - and six women have reported being attacked or assaulted on or near campus over the past three months!!!) Please email UNB President Elizabeth Parr-Johnston to express yourself on this issue. Thanks!
