CNN (I know, I hate using CNN, but the way in which it was written is fantastic. hehe)

quote:
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday rejected an independent commission to investigate his government's handling of the war against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

Instead, Olmert said he would appoint his own committee, which is expected to be more narrow in scope than a state probe.

If you are looking for a good comparisson of other leaders that have chosen this path... Look no further than to our Southern Neighboors in response to the Disaster of a disaster recovery plan. Bush rejected calls to appoint an independant commission to look into these failures and instead took it upon himself to lead up the investigation. The official report was one line: Bush finds Bush did nothing wrong.

The line from CNN I like:

quote:
Olmert praised the Israeli military's top brass for "agonizing" over their decisions to carry out operations at the risk of civilian deaths.

Y'know it's good when CNN even has to put "agonizing" in quotes. By the tactics used, I think we can successfully replace "Agonizing" with "Gleefully"

eddited to rename/expand the topic of the thread.

And Nasrallah had some after war reflections. from CNN:

quote:
Had Hezbollah known how Israel was going to respond, the group would not have captured two Israeli soldiers last month in northern Israel, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said Sunday.

But, in an interview with Lebanon's New TV, Nasrallah also said the war would have happened anyway -- a few months later.

He insisted, without offering evidence, that Israel had been planning to launch military action in October, and the July raid by Hezbollah merely moved up the Israelis' timetable.

cut

But, he added, "If we hadn't captured those soldiers, the war would have come in October anyway." Hezbollah's raid drew Israeli action sooner and "deprived the Israelis of the element of surprise," he said.

The Israelis wanted to begin this war," Nasrallah said, calling it "an American decision" with "many European countries" involved. He insisted Israel was looking for "an Arab cover."

snip
Despite Israel's reports that many Hezbollah fighters and officials were captured or killed, Nasrallah said, "the public leadership of Hezbollah -- they're all well, thank God. If the war had happened in October, it would not be like that."

It's an interesting reflection on Nasrallahs part... Especially in the form that this kidnapping and quick escalations now pretty much botched what could/should have been a massive Israeli victory.

I wonder if Israel still holds onto October war plans then? Their insistance that Hizbollah does not get rearmed so they can take them out later seems to point towards that ^^

Interesting article Noise. Thanks for posting it. On a side note to your side note. I guess we can finally put to bed the rumour that the soldiers were never kidnapped in Israel.

from your post above:

Wasn't aware that rumour existed. Nasrallah had coordinated such kidnappings in the past, fully with the expectation this kidnapping would be no different than prior... Hizbollah gives back the 2 soldiers and Israel gives back the 1000 Lebanese children and women currently incarcerated in Israeli prisons.

Nasralla's statement didn't necessarily stipulate where the capture took place..the author may have put his own two cents in.

That is total bullshit, there are no Lebanese children in Israeli prisons and if there are any women at all its because they were attempted suicide bombers/terrorists.

In any case we keep talking about what is disproportionate. Why should two Israelis lives be worth 1000 Lebanese lives. I think two for two is fair.

Srry stockholm, I did exagurate... It's 1000+ palestinian people arbitrarily held and a portion of them are women and children. That was brought up throughout the Lebanon-Israeli thread

quote:

Are you suggesting the Hizbollah should have captured 1000 soldiers then?
